Fished Willard from the kayak Saturday with limited success. Launched from Pelican Beach trolling bright colored cranks south to Freeway Bay. The FF was marking quite a few fish but no takers. I turned around and trolled to the north dike to fish with some kayak buddies trying different lures and presentations on the way, still seeing fish but no takers.
Got to the north dike and cast a little bit with spoons and swim baits to change it up a some but still nothing. To this point I had been using hi-vis colors reasoning that with the lack of water clarity I needed something that would stand out. I changed to a shad colored Flicker Shad on one rod and kept a fire tiger on the other and headed south fishing a little shallower than I had been and closer to the brush.
I was seeing fish at 8-10' in 12-15' FOW and trolling deep to shallow when " bam" I got my first one. I was pretty shallow by the time I got him in the cooler so turned around and made another pass and got another on the same lure. I tied an identical Flicker shad on the other rod and proceeded to catch several more. All close to shore coming from deep to shallow water.
Later in the afternoon I met up with Obifishkenobi and went out on his boat where he gave me a tour of the lake and a tutorial on fishing with mussels. The fish didn't want to cooperate but it was fun to get out and meet a good guy and learn something new. Thanks Shawn.
