I'm moving to California this May and have been scoping out the California section on here. ITS FREAKING DEAD! Why!? BFT members in Utah are awesome, helpful, and informative why isn't any other state? Why does the board suck so bad in California? Anyways I'm going to miss all of you, and your help. I'm not impressed with what I'm seeing so far in CA... end rant.

Do people even fish in California? It's probably AFL across the whole state with mandatory apologies to each fish you catch and a light organic snack to replace the calories they lost from being caught.

[#0000FF]The problem with trying to have an active board in California is that the state is huge...with several defined areas and many different fishing interests. There are many other fishing forums in the state, with each specializing in a local area or a specific type of fishing. Almost impossible for one forum (BFT) to be able to provide adequate and up to date info to all those with specialized interests.

good luck with the move, guess you'll have to find some local shops around where you will be living to get the scoop.
I have found it better on the east coast, looks like I'll be headed to Florida sometime in 2018....lots of forums and info. there.

What TD said. I sometimes visit a talk board that's strictly kayak fishing in the San Diego area - and it's a very busy board. (They have some interesting kayak mods, which is what interested me.)
I'd bet there is at least one talk board that's centered wherever you're going to live in Cali (for which you have my sincerest condolences.)

Givers vs. takers perhaps? Meaning most people in Utah are raised pretty well to be givers and helpful people, whereas in CA it's mostly about taking as much as you possibly can. Oh, and make sure you carry the maximum coverage possible for underinsured motorists, as CA has a high percentage of drivers within a certain demographic without insurance.

You will find some good fishing in California. Way better Bass and Catfishing than Utah. Trout fishing not so much.
Plus you got the ocean as well.

I'm going on a trip to Newport Beach in a few months and I'm hoping to do some ocean fishing while I'm there. I also found the CA BFT section kinda dead. However I have found several other CA fishing forums with very friendly and helpful members. The forums I've found are very specific. Like, "CA pier fishing", "Southern CA surf fishing" ext.
The other thing I've noticed is you almost have to hire a lawyer to help out with all the CA fishing regulations.

I lived there in the mid to late 70's, and about the only thing that kept me sane (sorta) was escaping the So. Calif. city life to the mountain (sorta) areas for some river and lake fishing....and I did find some good trout fishing, but exploring was the ticket....Glad I moved here to Utah after that ?? part of my life, but if you look, you'll find some good fishing opportunities wherever you're living...I also enjoyed several deep sea excursions off Long Beach area, and fishing off piers in San Diego....Guluk....

Ha! Best comment I read all day. Probably people holding signs at the boat ramps saying fish have rights to.

I moved back to utah about 2 years ago from central california coast. I really do miss ocean fishing. There was a pier fishing forum that was pretty active and had tons of info how to shore fish. My friend I got back into fishing is catching 5+ lbs largemouth, so you may not have the trout fishing but there are other species out there to fish for.

You have my sincere condolences. I am a true Native of California. I was born in Los Angeles, and grew up from L.A. to Oakland and back. Was a great state back in the 60-70's. Has become WAY-WAY to liberal for me. I left SoCal in 73 to join the Air Force. Never had the desire to return, although I was stationed in NorCal for 19 months. I can remember great fishing in many areas, and Silverlake was and I think still is one of the best trophy Bass lakes. But as others have stated, the regulations, and various "stamps" required on your state fishing license will drive you crazy figuring out what you need. Then you have the bad luck to catch a fish you don't have a stamp for, and a Calif. fish cops sees it, and bang !! Ignorance is no defense, and you were supposed to what was biting your line BEFORE you caught it. [mad] There was, and may still be some great surf fishing up near Ventura, and just below San Diego between San Diego and the Baja border. But it has been over 40 years since I fished in Calif. and I don't miss it one little bit. Have fun if you can, be safe, and good luck.[fishin]
