Got out to the south marina about 3:30. Fished out to the rock pile without seeing a fish. Turned north and headed towards the feedlot working out into 25 FOW. About 4, whamo first fish on. Turned out to be a small wiper. No Skunk for me. Continued north into the top end of Freeway Bay, staying in 23 - 25 FOW. Two more wipers in the next 30 minutes so I decided to circle back through the same area. No luck, but while turning to go north again another bite. Turned out to be an 18 inch walleye. Spent the next 45 minutes circling around the north half of Freeway Bay. Broke off a wiper and missed several other bites. About 6 PM, I picked up another walleye in about the same place as the first. While the fishing was still good, I had my flyrod with me and wanted to try a balanced leech on some kitties so I reeled in and ran over to the light pole. Rigged up and fishing by six thirty. First cast of the day, and I caught my first SMB of the summet. By seven thirty, I'd picked up a couple of kitties on the leech and missed several others. Guess they must have liked it. The catfish completed my first Willard Slam of the summer so I broke down the flyrod and started trolling north. By eight thirty I'd landed two more wipers and another kitty (only the second or third kitty I've caught while trolling). Fish on the west side seemed to be in 28 - 32 FOW. All fish caught trolling were caught between 2.7 and 3.0 MPH. Final tally was five wipers, two Walleyes, one SMB and three kitties.
Good to get into some fish at Willard, but the highlight of the day was my new fishing partner Gersey. Gersey is a six month old malumute/border collie mix. When I went to net one of the last wipers, I found a steaming pile of crap in the middle of the net. One flip and it was the water skiers problem. Who knew I'd gotten the Michael Jordan of fishing dogs - nothing but net.
