Quality not quantity sturgeon 06-17
#1
Hue, Rick and I spent the last 2 1/2 days chasing sturgeon in Idaho. After the first day I thought that I would be forced to walk the plank -- zero sturgeon caught and only one bite all day.

Second day a little better - seven sturgeon landed.

Last day slow again with only one sturgeon landed and a handful of missed bites.

Hue, a sturgeon newbie, did exceptionally well with landing a 7 1/2' and a 7' sturgeon. BTW - the smallest sturgeon we caught was 4 1/2'.

I provided the entertainment by losing my sole and flopping around the boat and Walmart (purchasing new shoes).

Another fun trip with most enjoyable company. Can't wait to do it all over again -- and glad that I don't have to wait very long for a redo.

glad you got Hue a sturgeon, he is a good guy to be around

I could not be a guide because, if I don't catch any fish I have a hard time sleeping at night

Glad everyone caught a sturgeon or 2...
I like the picture of Hue with his sturgeon...
Did you take them for beef cheek tacos at your favorite Mexican restaurant??

Yes we ate there and I didn't hear any complaints but I don't think anyone had any beef cheeks or tripe.

Los Pinos I would guess. I don't remember any of that stuff on the menu?

How was the wind?

Yes Los Pinos and yes it is on the menu. Quite windy Thursday from 3 PM on and just occasionally breezy the rest of the time.

It was a great trip with even better company. Although Kent teased me about my new rod, that I named Blue Beauty shown in the picture, it landed 4 of the 8 sturgeon that were caught. He called it my broomstick. We landed every fish that we hooked.

My cousin from Arkansas is coming out 2 weeks earlier than previously planned in hopes of getting in on the action.

This trip increased my previous big fish of 20 lbs. up to about 220 lbs.. I managed to get three sturgeons at 4 1/2', 7.0', and 7 1/2 '. Kent really knows his way around the sturgeon.

This was a great trip. I learned a lot about catching a new species and made new friends. Can't beat that in my book!

Just wondering how you felt for the remainder of the day after jumping in the water to take a photo? That stuff sure is mucky. I wish there were better areas to take photos with the sturgeon from the shore, but there doesn't seem to be too many slowly sloping sandy areas where we fish. I've thought about trying to get in the water before, but haven't yet.

Kent almost did on our last trip there with that nice sturgeon that came unbuttoned.

Fortunately, only the water bottle was broken. [Wink]

Great report, thanks for sharing!

The only sturgeon I ever saw caught was 4 1/2' on 8 lb test. We were fishing for walleye in the Columbia and it took a jig tipped with a crawler. My buddy knew he had something big, but he was sure surprised when that fish broke the surface!

That was way back when you could keep them over 4 and under 6'. Now he goes every year for the C&R fishing.

I guess that means your boat is fixed?

Apparently, from looking at the photo, you were fishing above the damn again. Have you ever tried fishing the river?
Do you order the 3 amigos at Los Pinos?

Unfortunately, my boat is still not fixed. Hue was kind enough to provide his boat for this trip. My boat would have been fixed last week, except one of the parts they ordered was also faulty and Lee had to order another part. Hopefully, it will be repaired by the end of this week.

I have fished the river several times, but not right below that dam. I have watched them fish there before and talked to some of the anglers.

Haven't ordered them yet. Are they good?

The shore line had about 6 -9 inches of silt. the water temperature was fine but the wind cooled me down quite a bit. I wish that I had taken off my pants so I would have had dry clothes to put on. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was mucky, I came out slimed like a ghostbuster. Going up again Monday and hoping for a repeat performance.

I'm not sure. That is why I was asking. My friends tell me that is the popular dish there. I normally go for the Chile Rellenos in the Mexican places that I visit.
