Are those fish or bull dogs? (Willard)
#1
So I know that this post is a little late but last weekend I finally made it up to Willard (for the third time in my life) to try and catch some of these whippers that I keep hearing about. We got to the lake around 3:30 in the afternoon. We started by buzzing over to the island but when we got in that direction we found several boats already set up there so we moved over to the northern end of the dike. We trolled for several hours with no luck and tried just about everything in the box. at about 6:45 we finally caught one. I have to admit I was a bit surprised. I don't think I have ever seen a fish fight like that in Utah before. I am usually fishing for trout so I only had 6 lb test line on and the drag wasn't set terribly tight but holy crap did that thing take line. Over the course of the evening we caught 7 more fish before the bugs came out like a plague. I have to say that I think I am hooked. Those fish were hands down one of the funnest fish that I have caught in a long time. It is like hooking into a bull dog with a bad attitude. I liked it[Wink]

That's what keeps me coming back to Willard even though I often don't catch anything. I fish with 8 lb test line with a flexible fishing pole. Once those Wipers get up to about 2 or 3 pounds they fight like the devil. I've seen them snap my line when the drag isn't set right, or break off or straighten out the hook. Lots of fun!

Amen on the hooks. we caught everything on the same 2 rapalas and between the 4 treble hooks, 3 of them broke trying to get them out of the fish. I was very impressed on how tough they are

I hear ya, BTW. My biggest wiper (5 lbs) came on a 1/8 oz crappie jig, 4# test and an ultralight rod.

Let's just say a lot of line went out several times and it took a while.

I fished w\Willard for my first time last year and love getting a wiper on the line. I was using a super lite rod that I use for Kokes at strawberry. It is a blast pulling in a fish that is fighting like that on a rod that bends like it does. Lots of fun.

I use my kokanee rods for wipers and I will say it's a hoot!
