Powerbait Sink/Float
#1
Howdy, Fishin' Fam,

As much as I love powerbait, I have found a problem with using it. I like to sink it to the bottom and have it float about 3 feet from the bottom. The problem is whenever I use bigger hooks so the fish (mostly trout) don't swallow them, the powerbait doesn't float. When I use tiny hooks it sure as heck floats, but it sure as heck gets swallowed as well.
Any suggestions? Is there a light-weight larger hook out there? Should I use a bunch of powerbait? Is this inevitable with America's bait?

Thx.

For hooks that have been swallowed we have found that the red hook removes with the balls on the end are quite effective out getting the hooks out with out hurting the fish to much.

We tried larger hooks too but the catch rate dropped off alot with that big ball of bait floating.

Recently we found some small colored foam balls somewhere in the fishing section at cabelas. They are much more buoyant - we'd put them on the hook shank and then wrap in power bait. Seemed to help a little once you get it set for your liking.

Something like this is about all that can be done. Big wads on big hooks, small wads on small hooks, or perhaps corkies slid on before tying on the hook.

Whenever you hook a fish deep just cut the leader and tie on a new hook and the chance of survival for the fish is much better.

I agree with Fishgiver -- just have a lot of smaller size hooks on hand (not treble hooks) and be prepared with a knife or scissors to cut the line right by their mouth, leaving the fish in the water while you are doing it..... pretty bad when guys drag their fish out of the water, squeeze it by hand while trying to unhook it, then toss it, or kick it back in the water....about 0 % survival rate...tks for being concerned....Guluk...

If you are using power bait you should plan on keeping the fish you catch. But if you must use power bait to catch fish and you must release them use a single hook with smashed barbs using the power eggs they stay on because they are plastic and they work just as well as power bait dough.
