Utah Lake Trip 3
#1
Made one more trip to UL, Lincoln Beach today. Will probably be the last one this year. But it was worth it. Didn't catch near as many, and not as fast and furious. But caught enough and even had some laughs.
Launched out of LB heading for BI again. Tried trolling for some whities, and wasn't to be done today. Got close to BI, brought in our trolling lines, and son had a WB on his lure he hadn't even felt. But after a few cranks of the reel, the little WB did a self release, never to be seen again.

Got anchored off the north side of BI, and our lines out. Didn't have to wait too long for the first hits. An almost simultaneous double on my lines. Now I usually loose at least one on a 2-fer hit, but boated both this time.

Didn't have my lines back out very long and son got a hard hit and run. Fish almost to the boat, a few surface splashes, SNAP ! Son's line broke. Not more than a minute later one of my poles bent over almost double. I got a good hook set, lots of head shake, and while I was reeling, make a comment just joking with my son " wonder if it's the same fish that broke your line" To the boat, in the net, son says " it IS the same fish!" Sure nuff, his hook and broke line in one side of that greedy cats mouth and mine in the other. [laugh] We called that one his.

We each boated 3 or 4 more, biggest one was 23 inches, smallest about 21. Nothing to bump my contest score, but a nice day with son #3, fish boated and released, and all returned home safe and happy.

P.S. To whomever bought or provided the fish grippers at the Cat Contest Dinner last year, that I won as a door prize, and then thought they were such a good idea I bought a set for my son......those grippers got one heck of a workout at UL these 3 trips. Many thanks...........they work GREAT!

Oh man TC, I was down there today too... I could have just picked that dolly up. Dang. I'm still trying to put together a Willard trip tomorrow depending on work. I'll call you if I'm able to come up.
With all the good reports, we decided to try our luck at cat fishing. Never have specifically targeted them before, we were not disappointed. It was pretty much one after another until we had our fill. Pretty fun day. You probably heard me pull up when I clunked a rock with my prop. I was being super careful too, never even saw what I hit on the finder or in the water. I'm glad I was only going troll speed. I was at least 400 yards from the island. Never having been there before, I couldn't see the direction of the points sloping away. Oh well- no skag damage at least. I hope at least someone got a good chuckle out of it. I've owned my boat for 17 years and never touched bottom, still had a painted prop. Other than putting my signature on that bird island rock it was a pretty awesome day.

I've just about used up my extra leave time, and most of my weekends from now thru Oct are pretty well filled up.

Well I didn't have the dolly there with me. It's in the boat shed.
We started out in the north side horseshoe of B.I. That's where we made all our catches. Went around to the east side for awhile, but seems the bite turned off for us. Trolled our way back to the LB dock, and headed home about 2 P.M.
Sorry about the prop bite. I didn't hear much out there but all the screaming birds...[Smile] . I have a 100-200 yard trail marked on my GPS around the outside edges of Bird Island where I have had safe depth. When I get to those points, I slow way down, and sometimes go in reverse and back in real slow so my sonar can see the contour changes sooner. I've avoided quite a few lone rocks that are poking up out of an otherwise flat bottom. There were several other boats around the island. Was that you by yourself off the north west corner, in a fiberglass boat (couldn't) see what kind. But the guy in that boat had his shirt off and seemed to be catching some nice cats. We were in the little 14' Lund with the Bimini top up just inside the horseshoe.

Hey if you contact me, may be better if you text first. I get lots of calls that show a number but no name, and I don't answer them .
