Green River A and B section. What to use for a non fly fisherman?
#1
Floating the river in couple of weeks and looking for what to use as bait with a spinning rod? Seems like most tips and videos I've been watching people are fly fishing it. I've never been to the river before so would like to avoid a skunk for this trip. Would i be able to do fly on a bubble? Spinners? Rapalas? Would power bait on a bobber work? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Countdown rapalas in blue and white, black and white, rainbow or brown trout patterns. I also do real well with 3/4 oz. gold jakes lures
I fish the B and C sections with these lures exclusively with great success

[#0000ff]I'm not a Green River expert but I make marabou jigs for several BFTers who do well with them on the Green. Most prefer 1/8 to 1/4 oz. jigs...depending on depth and flow rate. Standard colors in Black, tan, copper and olive seem to work best.

Fish them by casting upstream or quartering...and then let them bounce down in the current. Keep your rod tip high and reel to keep the slack out of the line.

Another option is to fish a tandem rig...with a jig on the bottom, for weight, and a fly on a dropper from 18" to 2 feet above. Or...you can reverse that and fish the jig on a dropper and a fly or streamer swimming behind. Both work.

I'm pretty sure it is artificial lures only. Black maraboo jigs and Rapalas are what I was going to recommend, also.

Do check the regs about the bait and keep limits to be sure.

It is artificial flies and lures only. Another thing to watch , If you see small frogs along the grassy banks, (It happens this time of year) Throw on a small frog flatfish 6' behind a bubble clear full of water and hang on. I have had epic days with that rig when you catch it right and the small frogs are present.
Any of the above mentioned rigs though should prevent any skunk for sure.
Also the slot limit is 2 fish under 15" and 1 fish over 22" all the way from the dam through the c section

I have family members that don't fly fish but love to float and fish the Green.
I set them up with a fly and a water bubble.
Try Streamers like Wooly Buggers and Leaches.
If you can find some, Pistol Pete Flies are great. They have a small propeller blade in front of the fly.
Tie on the full water bubble using a swivel snap to keep the bubble from moving up the line toward the fly. and add about 7' to 8' of leader from the bubble to the fly.
No sinker needed as the bubble full of water will sink on it's own.
Cast across stream and allow the line to sink as you float past it.
Keep tension on the line as the fish will slam the fly.

Best colors are Olive Green Black or Brown.

Experiment on where to cast.
Upstream, across stream

Spinners will also work.
Try Rooster Tails and Jakes lures.
