Crappie Therapy
#1
This summer has been one of the busiest I've seen for me, and as you know I'm addicted to tugs so I try to feed the need when I can, which usually has meant night catting and less sleep. Well I've found a little therapy spot close by that has a half hour session each night from sundown till the skeeters drive ya away for cover. I take my 3 WT fly rod with any fly that is visible and floats. Been using renegades, but I put one on with white wings now and if you find a spot where the gills, crappie and sunfish are hanging out it can be so much fun. Last night I tried to count the fish I had to take off the hook and ended up with 21. I suspect I lost as many more on the way in. Action was extremely fast and I'm not sure I had many casts that didn't at least have a hit that I missed. This was the third night in a row of therapy, I hope the school sticks around because it sure has been fun. Most of the fish are smaller than 9" but they feel bigger on the 3 wt. all fish are returned to fight another day. Sorry I won't let this location out because I don't want the bucket crew to come in and clean them out like they always do. I'm hoping they'll grow up and make nice slabs someday. But I'm pretty sure there are other similar spots if you spend some time looking for slurps near sundown. Good luck. J

Nice going Jeff, if you can find fishing that good, so close to home, you are really blessed, sounds like fun times.

Yup feeling pretty lucky, it's like taking a trip to the high Uinta's except it's crappie instead of brookies... I sure like that fast fishing when the fish really don't care what you throw at them... and you get a ton of chances to hook up, so if it's not your day reflex wise it doesn't matter, cuzz you'll get plenty of chances to work out the timing...those times don't happen often, but when they do, it's sure fun... So yes I am feeling really blessed that it's within ten minutes of my front door... makes it great for a quick trip and a fix... May make that hour plus commute to work worth while... I love where I live, it's great!!! Thanks for the feedback... J

Nice Jeff. I went out Thursday evening and only managed one smallie almost in the boat and a couple very small cats. Sounds like I left too early.

Panfish on the fly. Don't get much better than that. You're gonna make me get my fly rod out if you keep talking like this.[cool]

Hey Rod, I usually don't get done in the fields until sundown or I'd try sooner, but it seems like that half hour as it's getting dark is a pretty active time... No smallies for me yet, but I'm fishing on the surface so I imagine the bass are down lower... Remember that massive hatch of crappie minnows last summer? I think they will make for fun in the next year or so... Guess the smallies didn't eat them all... Good to hear you're making it out, throw in the fly rod for next trip, I think it's the method more than anything right now... or maybe it's just a lucky coincidence, but sure has been fun... Good luck... J

Yup I was a slow learner, I always seen those little buggers flipping up there in the evening and I never would take the time and effort to go get my fly rod to try them... Then I did and dang those guys are fun, that flat body turned sideways really pulls hard for their size and the numbers I'm seeing is way faster than ice fishing for the panfish... just wish I could find where the bigger fish are hanging out... Took me a long time to get it through my head that panfish would take a fly too, don't know why I was so slow to catch on, but glad I did... pretty fun time.. Better get your rod out... Later J

Given half a chance I'll fill a bucket with gills, and I'm 8 or 9 different kinds of white. Whoever sees asians fishing for bluegill anyway? Wipers and walleye sure, but not panfish.

No that's not what I mean, what I mean is any of the gully anglers that roll in and catch fish by the bucket full and take everything home. Not caring about leaving anything for others to enjoy. I've seen it happen too many times and the fishing gets wiped out for several years. Most are white guys but if the shoe fits. I just think the F&G needs to drop the limit like Willard and maybe we'd avoid this problem, but they never listen to my suggestion. I know some lakes will carry heavy harvest and be ok, but this one really gets wiped out by pressure. So don't read stuff into the post that isn't meant. Later J

Oh BTW wasn't as good tonight only 20 fish but one was almost 11" so that was great. Had a lot of blank casts tonight with no hits and didn't lose as many, but it was still fun. All were returned to fight another day. Only one green sunfish tonight the rest were crappie. I think they are starting to remember being hooked so the bite is slowing down. Probably not the same fish but I have to make up some reason for the slower action. Might be the fly fishermen can tell us something about a hatch ending or something like that changes things. Anyway sure has been fun. Later J

Wow, nothing better than panfish on a three weight. Sounds like it would be worth the drive from Plain City. Might take the motor home and hit it at the crack of dawn.

The bucket guys don't care about limits. They take home every thing they catch. I worked with a guy that said his dad told him if it's bigger than the bait you keep it. And yes he happened to be asian. But I've seen lots of other races do the ssme thing of all ages.

I'll have to check in the morning, you're probably right it would be good then too. I need to expand my area to see if I can find bigger fish doing the same thing in different spots. I'm sure they are, but it's hard to leave fish hoping to find them elsewhere. Have you checked Willard around the tree line or in the north Marina? It's a very similar spot, they may be there doing it too. If not let me know when you're coming up? Later J

Yeah I know they do, and then they return for more later the same day... We had that spot up by Charlie's fishing really good a couple years ago, catching 13-14" crappie and we'd let them all go, so it was doing great for a few weeks, then someone seen us there and showed up with their buddies and fished it solid (when one truck would leave their buddies showed up and took the parking spot) for two weeks taking everything they caught... That area is still dead, can't pull a crappie for trying... So I'm a little over protective of the crappie out here, but I like to catch them and I know they won't over populate out here, too many predators eating on the population... just like to see the big ones around so there are more little ones to follow... Anyway I hope folks will help be reasonable in what they take so the good times will last longer... Later J

Sir, here's what the dictionary says about the term you chose to use in your reply to Skunked:

Slant, slant-eye, slant-eyed, and slope are highly offensive slurs that derive from a description of Asian eyes that appear to slant because of epicanthic folds. The adjective slant-eyed was first used in the 1860s. The noun slant-eye dates from the 1920s, and was shortened to slant at the beginning of World War II.

Personally I'm offended by your use of this offensive racist term on a public forum. Perhaps you would be better off thinking before posting.

+5 on that one, Larry.

It's a privilege to use a public forum to exchange information and everyone should show proper respect.
