St. George

We're moving down to St. George next month. Is there anywhere to fish for channel cats down there? I know Powell has them but that's a drive. Quail Creek and Sand Hollow have bullheads, but I haven't been able to find anywhere with channel cats.

Must be in the community pond. No other fishable water near Cedar City.

The North end of lake Mead may be your best close bet for decent channel catfish action. I used to get some nice ones in the Overton arm.

I'm not a fan of catfish but maybe Gunlock next year? You would have to ask the DWR in Cedar City for that. Otherwise, Lake Powell. I don't know if Sand Hollow has them but you could find out. Good Luck!

I will let you know more about Gunlock, tomorrow or the next day. I'll ask around today, and plan to drive up to see the level on my way to Pine Valley to fly fish.
Gonna be a-hundred and four today, good day to be at 6,000', I'll leave Sand hollow till it cools a bit, maybe Thursday.

Pine Valley, what a lovely place. Nice little brook and pond. I will go back, probably this week.
Baker, had water, pretty good amount, but nothing to gauge it by since it's my first time there.
Gunlock. Looked really fishy to me. Still water way back up the inlet with lots of flooded brush, I mean lots. Should be a good year for crappie, sunfish and bass recruitment.
After the draining 2 years ago, it has not been restocked with any catfish, although it looks pretty catfishy. Only bass, crappie and sunfish. So, till the bucketeers get to it, no catfish.

I've been asking around, SW, Hurst's, other fisherman and that spurred some research on line with the DWR.

The current management policy of the Utah DWR is that there be no channel catfish in the virgin river drainage. They are really afraid of Smallmouth in the drainage too.

Biologically these drainages down here are pretty unique. Relatively short in length, low overall volume and with limited and separate aquatic environments. The Virgin is mile for mile probably one of the most beautiful rivers in America.

So for cats it's either Wahweap on Powell or Echo Bay on Mead. Both a drive but doable for a day or night.
