Hyrum Dam
#1
Hyrum has finally started producing. It still needs a predator to control the massive population of 3" bass though.

45 filletable perch Sat and 52 Sunday- 7 large trout and 4 break offs. Eastern end of the lake. Had 3 very large trout try and take the perch off the line at the boat.

Very cool. Congrats! How big are "filletable"? To me that is 6-7", but only when I'm desperate....haha!

I'm going to be going next week with my brother and our kids to fish it and am wondering if the perch are any bigger than last years perch I caught (5-7")?

Man, I sure hope so! My ice fishing go to spots are bear lake (when/if it freezes), Montpelier Reservoir, hyrum, and mantua. Hyrum has let me down for a few winters now. It would be nice to start catching 8" or bigger perch again through the ice.

I'm planning on giving it a real effort at Oneida this winter and see if I can figure the fish out there. I've done really well for perch there this year so far and I'd sure like to have a spot for ice fishing that doesn't get pummeled as bad as hyrum and mantua.

Hey Mike, that sounds like a plan, but you'll have to be really careful with the ice up there. They are constantly changing the level and it has a current flowing under as well so it will be interesting if the ice is sound. But you're right about Hyrum getting pounded heavy. We'll have to hit it early before they catch'em all. Never the less it's a good report and I've been hearing Pineview and Willard are trending bigger as well so maybe we'll get some big enough to keep this year. 🤗

I think it's still going to be a tough ice fishing season. The amount of bass, gill and perch fry in there is beyond imagination.. The water has been so high this year that they have had places to hide. But there are also a massive amount out in open water and the fish are just feeding on them- be it a perch or a trout they all were spitting baby bass on to the boat deck. Tough to get a fish to hit your bait when they are present in such high numbers. I wish there was another predator fish ( hybrid non breeder) to put a dent in them.

They may be full for awhile but won't take long to thin them out. By ice season they'll be hungry and fatter. Thanks for the report. Ps. They've been putting a ton of Browns in there the last three or four years so I think your other predators already there. J

SA- have you been out on the dam this year- ? I have fished that lake since 74. it's certainly a different year and never has that lake - even in the 80's before it was killed with the the huge qty of small perch -have that type of bio mass in the lake.

I haven't been out since Mayish so I haven't seen what you're talking about. Sounds pretty crazy. I hope to get back over there soon. I really like fishing that pond in the fall. Hoping the trout have grown up a bit. Last time I was there we got a couple 14"ers but most were 12"ers. Somehow the water warriors scare me away from there in the summer. Haven't had much free time either. Thanks for the intell. Later J

Hit it early Sat morning- again fishing for trout was good- perch a little slower- we kept 24 perch and 4 trout- all very healthy- 14"- 15" 17' and 19 1/2". Off the water bt 10:30. Early skiers were as respectful to fisherman as I can remember.
