Drove to CC to do some duck hunting this a.m. Of course, I always check out the ice conditions this time of year as I drive by.
Strawberry is pretty much open water. There was a skim of ice 50/50 in the area of the Chicken Creeks. There was a couple of guys in pontoon boats in the same area, so the ice could not have been very thick. There was a guy ice fishing the bay near the road to the dam. He must of been fishing in very shallow water, as most of that bay is open water. The ice extends maybe 200 feet away from the shore in the far north end of the bay.
Currant Creek had a skim of ice that extended from the dam upstream just beyond the boat ramp. The rest of the reservoir is open water. Very little snow & roads are dry.
As I drove home around noon, the temps across Strawberry were 37 degrees - so not a lot of ice making going on today.
How the times have changed. There was a year in the early 90's when we were ice fishing off the end of the Strawberry Bay boat ramp on December 9th. Many, many years I have fished Mud Creek Bay a half dozen times by this date. Many, Many years we ice fished Currant Creek between Christmas & New Years. Maybe the cold temps predicted this weekend will freeze some of the open water! Good Luck Fellers & be safe!
