I fished at Currant Creek Reservoir with two friends today from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the upper end of the lake. Due to our light snowfall this season we were able to easily drive around the lake and get to the shoreline on the upper end. The road up from Highway 40 was mostly snow free with just a few spots of snowpacked and icy conditions. A front wheel drive vehicle could probably go where we went today with little difficulty.
We fished in 14 to 24 feet of water using small jigs tipped with mealworms and we had steady action on lots of smaller rainbows (8 to 10"), a few Cutts up to 15 inches and we caught two Whitefish. The ice where we were fishing was good and solid and was at least 7 to 8" in thickness. It looked like there were some areas of thinner ice down near the dam but it also could have been just new, clear ice forming. Most of the fish were near the bottom although some were suspended about 10 to 12 feet down where I was fishing in 20 feet of water.
There was a party of guys fishing in a red shelter near the dam in the morning but we didn't speak with them.
Weather was great and there was no w**d, so a perfect day to be on the ice.
The whitefish I caught today was the first one I've ever caught out of a lake or reservoir although I've caught many whitefish in rivers and streams. No fish were harmed in the making of this report.
