Cache Valley Ice???
#1
Ok I had to work today so I didn't make it out to check. Can someone give me a report on Newton and Hyrum ice thickness, edges and safety for tomorrow. I know Cutler is really crappy ice but still holding. There's about 7" and water on top with 2" of desolving top layers of ice. About 1.5" of good black ice on bottom and deteriorating stuff in between. Won't make another week unless we get some good cold temps to start repairing things a bit. Appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks J

Live on Newton this morning. Edges are shot bring a plank or you can use mine till 11:00. Ice is 6.5" out on and there is 4.5" of good ice. Looks like slush monster potential after it warms up. At least around edges. Be safe. J

Definitely an odd winter this year. To already need planks and it's only January!

Be safe....

Thanks for the wish. I broke my skunk with a 5" perch so now I can just fish. Got a breeze today that's kind of cold. Should have brought the flip today. Decided to move deeper and see if there's any bigger fish. Later J

Why do I keep going to Newton? it lets me down every time. Seen a ton of fish on graph and camera but they just won't take it. Lots of grabs and drops but they just don't get the hooks in the right spots. Found 10 crappie tonight at sundown but the best one was still smaller than 11" so no bump today. Later J

Derek, the ice is ok. However, edges are shot you will most likely need a plank. Later in the day I'm sure the whole edge zone (20-30' out) probably seems dicey. The main ice is slick as ever and must refreeze each night. Spikes or chains make all the difference for not falling and being able to walk. My Yak tracks saved me for getting in.

Out on I think there is 4" of good ice under the bad zone on top so it seems ok for now. Not usual January ice this is end of season stuff so day to day may change the story. Good luck. J

Fished Hyrum Saturday. 5 inches of ice. For a while there was only about five or six other people on the entire dam. The edges would crack a little and squeak but they were still solid no problem. The perch bite was red hot. Nothing of great size however.

Good deal, glad ya got on them again. Nice to hear we might get another day. Sounds like more people on Newton than Hyrum. That's unusual. I guess the thinner ice over there is a concern. Looks like we got 3/4" of good strong new ice last night on my irrigation pond. That's my ice gage before I try anywhere else. Temperature got down to 19 here so that helped. It was so strong I couldn't kick it out of a hole I opened last night. Thank you for posting the condition I'd sure been wondering about it. Kind of like porcupine. Still wonder if that ever got safe ice. I'd like to go try for some Kokes. Good luck and stay safe. Later J
