If you did not notice the mouth you would think it was a bass with that color of eyes.

They are fished for quite a bit in England. They are related to grass carp. The anglers in England who must fish "public" water go after a lot of rough, or coarse, fish, not what we would call a sport fish. You have to be pretty well heeled to fish for salmon, trout, etc. One of the most sought after trophies is a big old carp. No idea how tench taste. I had no idea they were present on this side of the pond.
P.S. Turns out that they are present all across the country, in 38 states. They were observed in Utah one year only in the 1880s. [signature]
The older I get the more I would rather be considered a good man than a good fisherman.

Wiki describes them as "edible". Not a very positive term. Probably due to their diet of snails and such.
They'd probably do explosively well in Mantua for that reason. [signature]

Caught my share of tench in Washington. They are a slimy fish, give up the fight quite fast, but........they are a fish. In Europe they are considered medicinal due to the slime coat. Personally, I'll go to a doctor. LOL

I caught several small ones while stationed in England in the early 70's along with some northern pike.

I think they came from Germany, and, like the carp, someone thought they would make a good food fish[bobdumb].

Found this line on eating them in WIkipedia,
such small scales, their quality is rather different.[8] Economic significance Tench are edible, working well in recipes that would otherwise call for carp, but are rarely eaten these days. [signature]
