Fishable ice
#1
From reports on here it appears that both Huntington and Scofield are iced over enough now to be fishable IF you are careful and follow standard protocols of checking ice depth as you go. The lakes in the Uintas along the Mirror Lake Highway have been frozen for some time. Any other waters you know of that are safe yet?

I was out at Huntington today and it had about 6in of ice in every spot I checked. There was a lot of snow and the roads were pretty bad getting there and back but still a fun trip. I ended up getting 4 total in the couple hours I was there but I was marking fish all day long just couldn’t get them to bite.

Sounds fun either way you look at it.

I had to call in sick so I could go to Lake Powell!

Welcome to the site Ice_Pirate and thanks for the report. Did the road maintenance crew by chance plow a place for people to pull off the road or did you have to park right on the main road?

It was plowed before up by the boat ramp but there was still a lot of snow. My truck made it in and out just fine but only with 4x4. There wasn’t much room on the side of the road to pull off I wouldn’t trust leaving my truck there. But the crews were out and about while I was headed home so it might have gotten better.

Was there a lot of slush on the ice?

No. Hardly any it was mostly all snow which was about 4-5in deep and then 6in of clear ice under that. I read there was a lot of slush and water so I was pretty surprised.

Yes, welcome, and we look forward to many more reports from you. Good start. Yeah, ice conditions can change daily; that's why we appreciate any reports that come in, especially early and late in the season. By the way, what did they finally bite on? Did you get tigers or cutts or both?

There is an unconfirmed rumor that Mill Hollow has 6" of ice. With the temperatures we've been getting it certainly is possible. If anyone gets up there please let us know how it is.

Like I said a few posts ago I had fish showing up on my screen all day long but could not get them to bite. I ended up getting one on a tube jig with a meal worm and then I switched to some power bait for the rest of the day and got a lot more bites that way. and they were all tigers

SBennett confirmed that Mill Hollow has enough ice to fish. Read his post. You'll need a snow machine to get there--too much snow this year.

Anyone up in Ogden seen Pineview? It was -1 last night and is 12 degrees right now

It takes a while after Mantua has capped, and it just locked up solid last night, so give it a couple weeks before you'll see ice on Pineview... But it's on the way... Later J

We can add Smith and Morehouse to the list of fishable lakes thanks to the report by The_real_clem.

There is now icecap at Firehole on Flaming Gorge. Other arms may have ice forming on them, too. Be careful and stay close to shore.

Some members think there is enough ice on Mantua to fish it Friday. Best to consider it marginal until further reports, which should come tomorrow. Weather forecast is for sub-freezing temperatures for highs so the ice should build quickly now. Just be very careful if you go and stay close to shore and use all other precautions.

There is some ice on Utah Lake harbors and people are fishing off the docks. It is not safe to go out onto the ice at this time and may not be for a few weeks. You could check the camera at the state park, but just because some people are out on it does not mean it is safe. Standard advice is to wait for four inches.

Some prognosticators are predicting that Echo will have fishable ice before too long. They think Pineview will take a few more weeks. Any updates on these or other lakes will be appreciated.

If 4" is the goal, then Mantua is not ready yet. I didn't drill anywhere with 4". However I did not check the whole pond

Several people are fishing near the boat ramp at Mantua today. There is 3" of ice. Avoid the east side for now as the ice is thinner there. Three inches of ice is really marginal so be very careful.

Boulder Mountain lakes are likely to all be frozen over now. Seven inches of ice was reported on Donkey Reservoir last week.

Cleveland is iced over.

Echo is NOT SAFE to go out on yet, even though it has capped.
