Crappy crappie at Pineview 1/23/19
#1
I took L-D-R up on his offer to take us out and show us how to fish for crappy at night. We managed to round up four first-timers plus EyLayo who was going for his second trip. Stickleback and I rode up together; EyLayo jumped in with us in Ogden; joatmon and his friend Rinehart came up from Riverton together. L-D-R brought two buddies so we had a group of eight altogether.

To put it simply, the bite was off. I caught one lowly perch before dark. A few of us struck out on crappie but some caught a couple each. Joatmon got a 9.5 and a 10 incher to put on the contest board and to take home for dinner. Since no fish were biting on the traditional stuff we were offering, he started trying different things. He put some PowerBait on the bottom of a Kastmaster and jigged it aggressively above the school we could see all over the flasher. The fish would rise up and hit it. EyLayo pulled in several dinks and a couple of keepers; he probably had the most fish for the night. He seems to make a habit of that.

On our way up Stickleback and I stopped at a local pond. We caught quite a few planter rainbows and some bluegill. Then we caught some little crappie. I felt silly taking a picture of a 4.5" crappie to put on the contest board. At least I got my ninth species, though. I was just sure it wasn't needed because I would catch some 10+ inchers at Pineview. Ha!

We had a fun time even if we didn't catch much. Now we'll have to go back again and catch them when the bite is on.

The older I get the more I would rather be considered a good man than a good fisherman.

Thanks for the report! I'm glad the trip was enjoyable, even though the slabs proved illusive.

I had a good time. Thanks to all what a great bunch of guys. I learned a lot on the trip. 1 drive the truck an extra hundred yards and somebody will pull your sled down and back up the hill. 2 Thow your glasses down ice hole so that somebody else can drive you home at midnight. However next time I will wait till I am done fishing so I can see the line.

Thanks again everyone

Thanks L-D-R, catchinon, and everyone else for the fun night. A little slow catching, but a great group of guys and I did catch my first crappies through the ice. Definitely need to go again.
