bait for minnow trap?

I never tried trapping minnows. Usually use a cast net. but right now the big carp are just tearing it up. I have a few traps that I bought at a yard sale. What is a good bait? or do I even need to bait them?

I prefer the cheapest dried cat food that I can by and also dried bread, dried rolls or similar (broken/crushed up in small pieces). And yes, you do need to bait them unless they are as thick as they used to be in Electric Lake.
