Stay Safe Stay Home

Guess I am done fishing for awhile even though I go with my dad and my son only (both I am around every day anyways) because I don't live in a county with a state park with a lake. So depressing! Be safe everyone!

Ironically, if I wanted to be alone, I would go fishing at a State Park that is not in my county.  Spacing between people when I do that is typically over a mile.  There is a lot of space in State Parks.  Here's a picture of me fishing at a State Park.  Just look at all the spaciousness behind me -- no getting a virus there!  Social distancing is greater than one mile!

"Herbert said outdoor activities like running, hiking, fishing and hunting are OK, adding that Utahns should give others at least 6 feet of distance while recreating outdoors and there shouldn’t be any congregations at trailheads."
I'm just gonna go ahead and function as normal while practicing that social distancing.
Ran to the store for a couple items, and is was impossible to practice social distancing due to how close the checkout stands were. That's OK, but I can't go to the middle of nowhere with the people I live with?
Business as almost usual.

If you read the actual document, state parks are closed unless you live in that county. I live in Davis county, so I am done. Oh well. Good luck to anyone that can still fish!

I've been going off of this.

https://stateparks.utah.gov/2020/03/16/c...9-updates/

I fish alone 90% of the time or meet friends at the location.

There are some conflicts in that directive and there is too much leeway in some of the items listed.  For instance: “Limit travel to only essential travel, as defined below, including to perform work if you cannot telework.”  Limit travel to what amount?  An hour; 2 trips a day; 1 trip a week?  Who determines how much to limit?

” Essential travel means travel to: engage in recreational and outdoor activities.”  Outdoor activities are further defined here: “Remain at least six feet apart from individuals from other households while engaging in outdoor activities (e.g., walking, hiking, running, biking, driving for pleasure, hunting, or fishing).  So traveling to and from a fishing venue (reservoir, stream, community pond, etc.) is okay as long as it is ‘limited’ - whatever that is.  So if it's 'esential' travel, why do I have to limit it?  And, “Do not go to or engage in activities at a state park located outside the county in which you reside (the availability of national parks will be determined in consultation with the National Park Service and the county in which the park is located).  Are we on an honor system here?  Or will the gates be manned and driver's licenses checked for legal address to prevent non-county residents access?  Out of the hundreds of fishing venues available to us in Utah, less than 43 (the total number of state parks in Utah and not all have a body of water within their boundaries) are closed to you via this directive.  Stream fishing is wide open throughout the state.  There isn’t a blanket order closing all Federally controlled venues to the public – yet.

This is a personal choice to stop fishing until the current crisis is over.  And you will not be judged by me as good or bad based on your decision to go fishing or to not go fishing.  Be aware of the risks, follow the guidelines/directives, and choose what works for you.  I was going to go to Jordanelle next week as my first trip of the year.  That is no longer an option for me because I live in Weber County.  The only option I have for boat fishing is Pineview which I have no desire to fish.  So, my choices at the present are limited (there’s that word again Wink ).  I’m not a big fan of shore fishing or river fishing this time of year, so I’ll probably just sit it out until I can start using our State Park venues once again.  But it is a CHOICE and not a REQUIREMENT.

You can still fish Pineview, Newton, or Lost Creek locally if they are ice free.  I would guess Newton is for sure, but don't think Pineview or Lost Creek are at this time.  But I don't know that for sure.  I can't do Newton or Lost creek by myself because neither have a tie up dock.  And I have no desire to fish Pineview even if it is ice free.  The docks won't be put in there until they open for the season and I'm not going to pay an almost $20 launch fee to fish there.  But you still have choices beyond just State Parks if you REALLY want to go.  Just sayin'!   Smile

So what about Lincoln Beach at Utah Lake. Bob, couldn't you go down there and launch your boat? Can I (from Idaho) go there?

I'm pretty sure my hang tag dose not say "county" parks pass. I say either close them completely, or let the public use them responsibly. There are many residents of Weber county that live closer to Willard than some residents of northern Box Elder. Only allowing county residents to use the parks does not add any level of added safety or responsibility. Or perhaps I'm just bitter because this ruins my trip to Jordanelle this week.  Blush

I could, and so could you.  However, I don't fish it for several reasons, not the least of which is having to haul my boat through almost 100 miles of Wasatch Front traffic during the week during commuter congestion both ways (I don't 'do' weekend fishing unless forced to do so).  Add to that the fact that Utah Lake doesn't have anything I want to fish for this time of year.  Go for it Randy.  Just stay away form the State Park portion of the lake and you'll be fine.   Big Grin

Take it up with Governor Herbert, Ward.  He's the one that issued the directive.   Wink

And have you EVER seen John Q Public act responsibily?  Yeah; me neither.   Smile

Robert, I'd go for it if I were you, granddaughters admonishment not withstanding.  And I'm sure Dirk will be more than happy to have your lodging business at the Villa Inn.  And the Gorge is Federal on both sides of the boarder.  Just make sure you have your WY AIS sticker on your boat and your WY reciprocity stamp with you if you are going to fish the Wyoming side.  It's my understanding that the Lucerne area is ice free at this time.  Have a great time if you go and be sure to post up some fish porn if you're successful.  For some of us, that's as close to a fish as we are likely to get for the next couple of weeks.   Big Grin

Would this apply to Strawberry? Not a state park, so seems like it's out of scope (although iced). But ice-off is coming.
