getting a pontoon licensed with a motor
#1
i purchased a 9 foot pontoon awhile back from anglers inn. i am interested in getting an electric motor put on it. i only weigh 170 pounds so i now 9foot pontoon will easily work. my question is how do you go about licensing my pontoon. what do i have to do. i have never licensed anything other than my car, so i am new at it. i purchased it years ago so i dont think i have a receipt. is that a problem? any info would help

thanks

I bet you will have to take it down to the DMV so they can look at it and if it doesn't have a serial number they will give it one and then get the boat sticker for it . I would take the motor too , just in case the want to see it too . I had to do something like that on one of my ATVs that didn't have a title and it rain hard that day so they were not real happy with me after going out to look at it .

Do you really have to license a 9' pontoon boat with an electric motor attatched? I thought it was only gas powered vehicles?[shocked]

Good Luck!!! I went through hell getting mine licensed. The DMV people can't do any two boats the same. My wife took the paper work to them to renew my son's pontoon and one for me that I bought from my brother in law. My son's was a snap but they wanted a title for mine. One was never issued. I had to pay for a transfer duplicate title which they never sent to me. My brother in law had to come in and sign a release of ownership and verify that he sold the toon to me. All in all about 5 hours and $40.00 later my toon was legal until I had to try and find a legal way to hang the reg.numbers on the craft. That is a whole different problem. Some times our politics can shore get in the way of common sense. DKS

I wish you didn't have to license them...but any boat with any motor needs a license. No motor=no license. Of course you can just play the odds game and hope you don't get caught!

That's true, any boat -- including a float tube even -- if it has a motor attached (electric or gas) it must be registered. But also, even boats that do NOT have a motor may have to be registered. If the boat is larger than a certain length, even if it does not have a motor it will still have to be registered. The only thing is I'm not sure what exactly is that maximum length. It could be 17 feet but I could be wrong.

There are a lot of horror stories about registering a pontoon with an electric motor;however, the davis county assessor has got it down pretty good.

Take your pontoon down to thee assessor along with your electric motor. write down the serial number on your motor.
the assessor will ask for a receipt if it is new if not tell him it is used or that the receipt is lost. They usually base the value on some arbitrary number like $500 bucks or so.
They will use your motor serial number as a reference for their own number. they'll scratch all this on a piece of paper, then just go get in line to register it like a boat. It took me maybe 10 minutes.I think it was $15 or so.

Go buy those mail box stickers that are about 3 inches high that correspond to the number they give you and put them on the front left and front right. The packet will have directions. Just make sure you clean the area on your pontoon with dish soap and water so the stickers will adhere. If the sides are dirty the sticker numbers tend to fall off.

I own a little blow up raft/boat thingy. Have an electrial motor to it, and haven't had any problems with it not being registered. This will be the forth year that I have had it. About 2 years ago, I did get checked for a fishing license, and was told that I needed to get it registered. But that was it, no ticket, just a simple little warning.

I once looked at a little float tube made to hold a battery and electric motor for my float tube. It is about 24" around. Weber county requires this to be regestered ad a water craft and you must place the stickers on it . The problem is that there is no front left or right to the little thing where the law requires the ID to go. I'm happy that it is not me that has to make these funny little rules. I guess we just need to obey them or suffer the consequences. The hard thing is knowing that there is a rule to follow. The proclamation does list the water craft regs and it pretty much says that if you have a motor on anything used in the water it has to be licensed.

I'm torn about this subject. I own two 8' Southfork pontoons, both outfitted with electric motors. I've owned them for 4 years, and heard that it was required to register them three years ago. I went into the DMV on 10600 South that year and they had no clue what to do. We finally ended up describing the boats to them, motor and all, and the woman went ahead and gave me the decals which I promptly put in my side bags and left there.

I haven't registered them since that time. I've been out on them all over the state and in Idaho and I've never had anyone even give me a second look. I've been at Strawberry when the patrol came by and waved and didn't give me a second look.

On the other hand, I've heard of guys getting questioned about their registration by F&G as they were leaving the water.

I'd really like to know if the regulations are enforced; I understand the wording is in there stating that all motorized water craft have to be registered, but most DMVs don't have a clue what to do. Do we have anyone on this forum who works for the state that can give us the real, actual, authentic answer to the question about registering electric motor pontoons?

Yeah as well as a new tax on the ice huts, you know it might be considered living quaters like a camper because you have a pee bottle in it. my hell we already pay user fees, registration fees, license fees, tax on our fuel to get there, why not just add more taxes to top it off, I think we should have a tax tea party. this is one of the regulations that is probably only enforced when you don something wrong or when the officer is having a bad day, it's best to get it registered, if you don't and they deceide to get you you will be paying a fine plus register it and if they inpund it you will have to pay to get it out, alot more hassle, and money.
when you go to get it registered take the sn# of the motor and your receipt and just tell them it's a boat. other wise they will be Confused.

a good friend that I know has one of them argos (6x6) amphibious atv's and not only does he have to register it as an ohv but he also has to have it numbered and tagged with watercraft stickers. it does have a trolling motor bracket and a bilgue pump and he takes it to willard bay all the time. Its quite a site watching him drive it from hiway 89 to the north marina and pay his fees and drive right down the boat ramp and away he goes. he only lives a short distance down the street from the marina and goes there quite a bit.

Electrics on inflatables are usually ignored by most but not everyone. Get an officer that has had a bad day who enforces the letter of the law and you will wish you had taken the time and $$ to get it registered. Most however either ignore it or give a warning. If you get questioned, just act ignorant and thank him for "setting you straight", and you will get just a warning. It is just a matter of time before it will be enforced because it represents a revenue stream for the State. Another tactic is to throw your jacket or something over the motor-out of site, out of mind.
