Nothing more than a hook on a stick. Normally a gaff does not have a barb, but just a large sharpened J on the end of a pole.

STIK WITH A BARBLESS HOOK ON ONE END AND HIGHLY ILLEGAL IN UTAH TO "POSESS WHILE FISHING" ACCORDING TO THE PROC. EXCEPT I THINK YOU CAN USE ONE ON EITHER THE GORGE OR POWELL FOR THEM BIG OLE FISH.....BUT I CANT REMEMBER WHICH ONE. YOU KNOW THE THING THE KILLER HAD IN THE MOVIE, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, HE WAS KILLING EVERYONE WITH..........PUT A FOUR FOOT HANDLE ON THAT MEAT HOOK AND YOU HAVE A GAFF.

Gaffs are illegal at the gorge. If there legal anywhere it would be at powell were the encourage anglers to keep as many stripers as possible.

Gaffs are great in the right situation. A guy with a gaff can land fish a lot easier than a net. The place to gaff is to the head if possible. This way you don't contaminate the flesh. A poor gaffer makes a body gaff. If the fisherman will set the fish up, the potential to make gaffs to the head are greatly increased. All this assumes that you are planning on harvesting the fish gaffed.
Gaffs can come in handy on the ice too even if you want to practice catch and release. As a larger fish's head is coming thru the ice hole, a quick, well placed gaff to the lower jaw is an easy way to land a larger fish by yourself of even with your fishing buddy. Gaffs have their place in fishing. They are a great tool if used correctly. In the wrong hands they can tear a fish up and contaminate the fish's flesh by pearcing the "innards" and introducing the fliuds into the flesh. Another tool that works well and doesn't do the damage that a gaff does is a snare but that's another subject... [signature] |
