Ice at Scofield?
#1
I heard from someone that Scofield Reservoir has recently filled. I am wondering what that has done to the ice. Has anyone been there recently that can give a report on the ice conditions. I think my only chance for one more ice fishing trip this year will be if I can get up there. I fished it real late in the season last year and could not keep the fish off my hook.

I fished it wednesday and there was a solid crust on the ice, close to 3 feet thick. At noon it melted to acouple inches of slush on the ice. Water level hasn't gone up yet.

Got around twenty big ones,10 little ones in a few hours. My uncle was being stubborn not wanting to jig aggressively and caught 1.

The good bite before ice off has began and will peak in the next few weeks and thru ice off.[Smile]

Fished Scofield Saturday and there is still plenty of ice to offer ice fishing for at least two to three more weeks. We fished by the island and it started off good but slowed way down. I move out 30 yards east of the island and caught a small one off the bottom. When I was letting my line down my jig had barely cleared the bottom of the ice when a two pounder took it and ended up on the ice. I put my jig back down about a foot below the ice and within 30 seconds had another two pounder on the ice. I ended up having my friends move out to where I was and while they were moving stuff I pulled in an almost three pounder on my friend's pole which was also about two feet below the ice. We tried fishing from the bottom up but never did catch anything below six feet down that was worth writing about.

On the way back in we tried other people's old holes with limited luck. We caught a couple but not so many that it's worth writing about. The last hole I tried was about 20 yards out from the east side and I had a big fish break my line off. Again I was only two feet below the ice. I finally put some plastic down and looked down the hole. I saw hundreds and hundreds of four to six inch fish swimming all around. They didn't seem interested in my jig or worm that I had down. It was just interesting to see how many fish were down there. Too bad they weren't nice big fish, give em a couple of years.

We tried all sorts of jigs and even power bait today. We only caught little fish on power bait. All of the big fish were caught on a 1 inch power nymph, smoke color, with a small piece of night crawler. We tried a lot of different colors and types of jigs and only had two hits on anything else all day.

It looked like the water has raised a little bit but not very much and not enough to affect the ice. The sunshine was beautiful and it was a great day to be on the ice. I'm hoping to get there next weekend when the edges are a little more slushy to get in on some of the early ice off edge feeders. That's when it gets fun.
