Bduck is in recovery from many joint and spine-related problems, the worst of which has kept him off the water. In Feb. I thought I would have major back problems after I fell hard on black ice on a concrete ramp. Like Bduck, I couldn't even get into a sitting position for 15 min. and didn't have my cell phone to call for help. Finally I was able to get up though with major back pain but thankfully no symptoms of a disk. I figured that even if there was a rib fracture, what could anyone do about? I needed help getting out of a car and rising from bed was difficult for weeks! Forget lying flat! In fact, for a few days after the fall, I could only manage some sleep in a recliner. I still ache after mowing the lawn on uneven ground after sitting on the John Deere or using muscles that aren't toned after lifting heavy objects. Forget jogging!
But at 76, I still got it better than many my age but I'm always amazed seeing others much older than me still mentally and physically active. Heck, Clint Eastwood argued a case in court involving a neighbor impinging on his property and he was over 90 at the time! He won BTW. Our 80 y.o ex-fishing club president on the other hand had both hips replaced in Jan. and sold his boat because of chronic health problems. Hopefullly he has been able to fish with others this year.
Lack of sleep like for so many others young and old, is a recurring problem. I can't remember the time I slept 8 hours and now only average 5 hrs./ day. which contributes to short-term memory loss and clumsiness. One thing that hasn't changed is my writing ability when it comes to fishing and lurecraft. Another is having a good imagination and the ability to recognize and solve problems. Logical thinking is my major tool of which so many do not possess young or old. Discipline wasn't only maintained during my time in the service during the Vietnam War, but now is sorely needed so as not to f things up royally! Mistakes happen, make no mistake, and I make them daily! Mental fatigue contributes. Frushstration is a common knowing that double-checking could have prevented screw ups. Even now, I have to have a pad and pen with me at all times to be
able to complete a list of future tasks. It's bad enough not remembering simple directions driving to places I've driven to for years and getting lost at times.
Getting old is a bitch, but what the H - it ain't over until it's over!
