WENT TO THE POND A MILE BEFORE THE TOOELE EXIT OFF I80, THE VIEW AREA ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE ROAD, WALKED DOWN ABOUT HALF WAY, FISHED A SKITTER POP NOTHING, PUT ON A BLUE FOX GOLD BLADE SPINNER WITH AND FLO. ORANGE HARMONIC CONE ON THE FRONT, CAUGHT 2 SMALL LMB, ONE WAS 10 INCHES, THE OTHER ABOUT 6. NICE DAY WAS THERE FROM 11AM TO ABOUT 12:30 OR SO. TWO GUYS IN TUBES HAD NOTHING ALL DAY TILL THEY FINALLY DRAGGED WORMS UNDER A BOBBER CAUGHT A SMALL BLUE GILL THEY SAY. JUST AS I ARRIVED A GUY WAS PUTTING HIS LITTLE, 8 FOOT?, JON BOAT IN THE WATER, WITH HIS MINNKOTA ON IT, HE WAS FOLLOWONG THE SHORELINE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POND, DIDNT SEE HIM GET ANYTHING. HEARD HIM EXCLAIM A FEW TIMES AS HE WENT PAST THE OLD PEIR POSTS IN THE WATER, I THINK HE HIT EM OR SNAGGED UP ON EM, ANY WAY IT WAS FUN TO GET OUT AND CATCH A FEW BABIES TO TIDE ME OVER TILL I HIT DEER CREEK THIS NEXT WEEKEND, I THINK IF MY PREGGO WIFE THINKS SHE CAN HANDLE IT. ITS ABOUT TO BLOW UP ON THE TOP WATER ACTION ON THE POND, THE WATER IS LIKE 12 FEET AT DEEPEST POINT AND ITS PERFECT TO SLIP INTO ON A TUBE, BY THIS WEEKEND THE WATER SHOULD BE WARM ENOUGH TO GET A FEW HOGS OUT OF THE WATER.

I also went to the I-80 pond on saturday. It was a pretty slow day, I ended up catching three small bass and one 17.5 incher my brother only caught one but it was 17 inches. All fish were caught on a senko imitation and released. A lot more people on this pond than I have ever seen, at least six float tubes. We need to make sure that people aren't keeping all the big bass. I love fishing this pond, and would hate to see it go down hill due to people keeping all the bass, it is very small and has only limited fish. I think that the fish would be contaminated anyways, aren't these the tailings ponds from kennecott? Well anyways, spread the word of catch and release, and let the bassin begin!!!!

You'd sure as heck never catch me eating anything out of there!
I know that the ponds are getting more publicity from site like this one. The last time I was out there, both of the other fishermen I talked to had never been there before. One of them had learned of the pond from reading BFT as a guest and the other was on the KSL website.

I watched a guy there one day fishing with live bluegills. I went over and he pulled out a bass that took up the whole bucket. I havent fished it for a while, I fish for largies closer to home nowadays, but I did do pretty well there one day.

THE POND IS NOT THE TAILINGS FROM KENNECOTT.. IT IS FED BY A NATURAL FRESH WATER SPRING DOWN TOWARDS THE DEEPER END OF IT. I WORK FOR THE MINE, THIS IS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR THE TAILINGS THEY ARE FARTHER EAST JUST OFF THE ROAD THAT GOES BY SALTAIR, AND CROSSES BETWEEN I80 AND 2100 SOUTH FREEWAY, THEY ARE OVER MORE TOWARDS 2100 SOUTH AND THERE IS ABOUT 3 MILES BETWEEN THE COMPOUND AND THIS POND. SO YOU ARE PROBALY MORE LIKELY TO GET A SALTY TASTE OUR OF THE FISH THAN ANYTHING. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT OTHER KIND OF FISH ARE IN THERE, I HEARD GILLS, CRAPPIE, AND SUNFISH YELLOW I THINK, BUT I HAVENT SEEN ANY OF THEM JUST BEEN TOLD BY PEOPLE THERE. I FISHED IT TWICE LAST YEAR AND ON THE LAST OUTING I NAILED A 5 OR 6 POUND LMB THAT WAS A TON OF FUN HE HIT ONE OF MY SPINNERS I THINK IT WAS A MANGLER....BUT I CANT REMEMBER THAT FAR BACK. TAKE A SPINNER AND JUST REEL THE HELL OUT OF IT SO IT ALMOST BULGES THE SURFACE, MAN THEM FISH COME A RUNNIN, THEY HIT IT SO HARD I HAVE HAD SOME COME CLEAN OUT OF THE WATER AND BELLY FLOP AND THEY TOSSED MY LURE 5 FEET AWAY WHEN THEY MISSED IT!! IT S A BLAST FOR JUST A LITTLE WALK AROUND, BUT BE WARNED THERE ARE LIKE CANADIAN SKEETOS THERE, TAKE A BAT AND SOME DEET TO GET EM OFF YA, I FOUND PUFFIN A CIGAR HELPS TOO BUT THE CLOUD OF SMOKE SPOOKS FISH WHEN THE WIND PUSHES IT OVER THE WATER.
BUT IT IS DEFINATELY NOT TAILINGS, I HAVE BEEN ON THE TAILINGS, AND THIS POND ISNT IT. THINK OF A BUBBLING LAKE OF MUD LIKE IN SOME OF THE SCI-FI MOVIES AND YOU WILL BE CLOSER TO THE TAILINGS, THEY MAKE US WEAR LIFE JACKETS BECAUSE IF YOU FALL IN YOU CANT SWIM IN THE GOO IT IS TOO THICK SO YOU HAVE TO FLOAT ON YOUR BACK AND GENTLY PADDLE OVER TO THE SIDE OR THEY TOSS YOU A RING AND DRAG YOU OUT...THE TAILINGS CONSIST OF THE SLUDGE THAT IS LEFT OVER AFTER THEY GET ALL THE METALS AND MINERALS OUT OF THE SOIL SO TRULY ITS JUST QUICK SAND AND IT DUMPS INTO THE PONDS AND GETS REUSED INTO SOIL BASE AND STUFF...IT ISNT TOXIC THEY CLEAN IT BEFORE THEY DUMP IT TO DRY THEN THEY DIG IT OUT AND SEND IT AWAY...NOT SURE WHAT THEY DO WITH IT...I THINK THEY PUT IT BACK ON THE LAND RECLAIMATION STUFF THEY DO TO RE-SEED SLOPES AND STUFF. YOU WOULDNT BELIEIVE THE ENVIRONMENTAL STUFF THEY HAVE TO DO OUT HERE....IT BLOWS ME AWAY.

OK the bass is interesting but the reclamation stuff is more fascinating. I read that they are winding down operations at the mine. Does that mean they will be halting operation permenatly? If so when. Just curious. And by the way it was in last weeks deseret news about the winding down of operations.

Well Moose, when they say winding down....its more like the end is in site. I work for the corperation that owns kennecott and about 40 sumpin mines world wide. they will be albe to mine the pit for about 15-20 more years, then it will become an underground operation from what I am told. they did shut down Barneys canyon mine, but that isnt the big one. What is happening now is all the dirt dyke they have built that is supposedly processed dirt with all taken out is getting run back through, apparently when the dirt was processed and they didnt have technology to get all the gold out, just copper, so now they are going to suck up all the gold too!! it is amazing they can take dirt they piled up 100 years ago, and get gold, silver, copper, zinc, aluminum, molybdenum and all out of it. then what is really left is sand...pure sand..that is why the tailings is so dangerous, its all wet sand....like a 75% sand 25% water mix, that can suck you in faster than you can cuss when a fish breaks off. But in the mean time there is plenty of stuff coming out of the ground still....so maybe in 20 years the mine will deplete and they have to dig under, that is what i am told. The exact truth I dont know either, I am glad there are almost 50 other mines world wide that I get to travel to so I still have a job. I guess you could say I am on the corperate level of kennecott since I work for the comapny that owns it.
that is about all I know....

THE VIEW AREA IS ONE MILE BEFORE THE TOOELE EXIT, IT IS ON THE LAKE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY ONLY, AND IF YOU TAKE 2100 SOUTH FREEWAY ALL THE WAY TO THE JUNCT. OF I-80 YOU WILL SEE IT DEAD AHEAD AS YOU MERGE INTO I-80. THE POND IS ON THE EAST END OF THE VIEW AREA WHICH YOU ENTER ABOUT 2000 FEET AFTER THE TWO HIGHWAYS JOIN. IT IS AT APPROX 14000 WEST, I WORK ON 12000 WEST...JUST LOOK FOR THE SIGNS AS YOU TRAVEL WEST THAT SAY "VIEW AREA" YOU CANT MISS IT...TOO MANY TIMES...LOL
