Colorado has a new state record wiper - 26 lbs 15 ounces, caught on a fly!!

Here's the link to the story in today's Denver Post:

Wow nice fish. When I was a kid growing up in colorado I didn't think they had anything but trout that is all my dad ever fished for.I am going to have to check some other spots out when I get out that way this summer.

That is interesting. From the picture, it looks like it don't have much of a hump back (sometimes I like to refer to wipers as "humpies"). I wonder if when they get older and bigger like that one they start to look different in shape and color.

Wow, what a monster and it could have been a world record, too bad he drained his live well and wasn't able to weigh it sooner. Hey Don, have you ever fished that lake? Thanks for the post, I just might make that trip up to Colorado soon. WH2

Hi Curt-
Yup, I've fished that lake. I haven't fished it much in the last 5 years (too many trips to utah!) but I'm going to start hitting it regularly. The boatramp is about 110 miles from my house. What a pig that fish was, huh? It has a very large walleye and wiper population but they've been pretty tough to take in big numbers because they're so well fed with the gazillions of shad. It's also a good smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass fishery.

I thought you guys might be interested in seeing that story!

According to Tom Pettengill from the DWR, Willard wipers can never get as big as that fish. He said he was hoping that they would get up to 11 lbs but now he thinks they have reached there maximum size. Wipers need deeper water to do real good and Willard just can't provide that, deeper water means cooler water in the heat of summer. I hope he is wrong because I'd sure like to think they could get bigger than 8 lbs. You can get more info about this topic by reading exactly what he said in the special guest section. WH2
