I got some gift certificates for Sportsman's and need a new set up. Here is what I plan on going after, maybe you have some suggestions.
1. Big lake trout at Fish Lake.
2.Tiger's at Pineview.
3. Some Pier fishing in So. California.
I hope there is a versatile set up including rod and reel for what I want to go after. I know with my spinning outfit I can use inter-changeable spools for the different lines. What type/strength line do I want? I have no clue how the baitcasters work. Any input is much appreciated.

YOU WILL NEED A BASEBALL BAT TO WHACK EM WITH, A PAIR OF LEATHER GLOVES SO THEY DONT GET YOUR DIGITS, AND SUNBLOCK, MAYBE A STEEL CABLE 500 FEET, WITH A MEAT HOOK ON THE END, MAYBE SOMETHING IN THE 3/4 INCH THICK RANGE...LOL...MAN, I DONT KNOW. THATS ALL PRETTY BIG STUFF UNLESS YOU WANNA TRY TO USE A FLY ROD....OR YOU COULD USE NOODLE STICKS OFF THE PEIR, MAYBE TEN FOOTERS.....TIGER MUSKY, I WOULD GET A UGLY STIK, HEAVY ACTION WITH 15 POUND LINE AND MAYBE A TITANIUM LEADER PACK IN THE 50 POUND RANGE......AND BIG, UGLY SPOONS, SPINNERS, BUCKTAILS, RAPALAS..LIKE THE 11 INCH RAPALAS...LAKE TROUT, I CAUGHT ON MY SPINNING GEAR MED/HEAVY UGLY STIK LIGHT, 7 FOOT, QUANTUM REEL FRONT DRAG, DONT MEMBER MODEL, 14 POUND FLOROCARBON, VANISH, AND LIKE 1/2 TO 2 OZ JIGS IN SALMON-ISH COLORS IS WHAT I USED....GOOD LUCK!! I THINK THE BEST THING IS TO LOOK AROUND AND SEE WHAT THERE IS....

I think that a baitcaster is the way to go when casting larger lures. Many people have a hard time getting use to a baitcaster so I wouldn't recomend it unless you are willing to deal with the frustration of backlashes that you will get while learning to use it. With a baitcaster I would use 14lb or 17lb line when fishing for tiger muskies and larger lake trout.

i would say since you don't use baitcasters find a good quality spinning rod and reel able to hande 15-30# that should work well for all you mentioned as for line maybe a 20# braid it a good all round test the problem with braids is they show up well in water so buy some floruocarbon to use as a leader

aquaman: I agree, I use bait casters in S. Cal ocean fishing but the backlash was a mess. And we were't catching anything that big. Get a good "quality" spinner and enjoy

Penn international 965 reel, heavy action 7 ft st croix avid series rod, spool it up with 20 lb fireline and you will have no problems for lakers or tigers.
But hey, thats just my opinion.

MAYBE JUST GET WHAT FEELS COMFORTABLE, AND YOU THINK IS RATED TO HANDLE THE JAWS YOUR GONNA BREAK WITH IT...AFTER ALL WHEN YOU LAY INTO ONE OF THOSE BIG SUKAS YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO HANG ON TO THAT DANG ROD FOR A WHILE......COMFORT MAY BE A KEY TO NOT WEARING YOURSELF OUT IN THOSE EXTRA LONG 10 MIN + BATTLES.....THERE IS A REASON THEY PAD THE HANDLES ON RODS AND GOLF CLUBS....JUST LOOK AT MY TAG LINE...AFTER THE LATERS,

dude your talking 3 difrent kinds of fishing.. first big lake trout in fish lake?? well ok there might be some in therer but not that meny.. but a good tolling rig would be my first choice there..mussky at pineview would be a bait casting outfit with a 8 feet meadem to heavy action bass rod.. and the pier in so,cal well that would be a 9 foot surf spincasting rod loaded with 20lbs line.. so i dont know how your going to get all that out of one pole and reel..

I recieved a gift certificate from IHC where I work for the past 11 years, so I used that to buy a easy-troll 2 downrigger by Cannon.
Put that on your boat and catch some laker with your normal gear but make sure the line is a tough 20 pounder cuz those lakers of Fish Lake and the Gorge are big and heavy...

i would think that a 7 foot ugly stik would do well in med heavy for all but the surf and a shimmono stradic reels are nice put on some 30-40 pound proline braided line and have a goood time.......
