WIPER LURES?

I AM HOPING TO GET SOME NICE WIPERS THIS SUMMER I WAS JUST WONDERING WHAT EVERYBODY USES UP AT WILLARD. I HAVE A SHAD RAP AND SOME PLASTIC MINNOWS THAT I HAVE USED IN THE PAST, THEY SEEMEDTO WORK PRETTY WELL JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS. I WILL BE FISHING FROM SHORE MOSTLY IF THAT MAKES A DIFFRENCE

I've always just casted 1/8 ounce white leadhead with a 3" white curlytail from the west dyke reeling with a slow retrieve.I also catch smallmouth out of Willard with it.

When they're boiling, anything that resembles a shad will work, which means anything white. Some blue highlights are also favorable. Boiling baits should also run on the surface or just under.

Trolling baits are typically shad crankbaits, white with white dot near head, that dive a few feet or so. If you're running too deep at Willard you'll start catching catfish instead of wipers.

For casting, anything white that casts well. Whether it's a jig, spoon, or lure like a Rattle Trap (one of my Willard favs).

A long time ago when wiper fishing was new to utah, the "old boys" of wiper fishing chased them with the hottest wiper lure out there, a spoon. A shiny thin silver looking bait fish imitator. Why not? These days if you say that, a guy looks at you funny and says "dont you need a rattle trap?"

In line trout spinners used to be real hot too. People caught tons of fish on them. I know lots of people that still do. Heck I bet you have a few of those in your trout box.

Tube jigs, curl tail grubs, swim baits ect all have claimed thier fair share of wipers.

The rattle trap style lures, or lipless crank baits, are the new popular ticket. But tons of guys catch wipers on long minnow style cranks as well.

But imagine this, guys catch them on worms too. Not only on spinner harnesses, behind a bottom bouncer but on a worm and bobber.

There really isnt a magic, wonder lure. Everyone has thier prefrence, but its based mostly on thier expirinece and what they were taught works for the fish.

The fact of the matter remains that they are still a fish. They will strike for food, they will reaction strike, and behave like fish. Just keep in mind they are big time predators.

Heck I have even caught them on skirted jigs with a big old six inch lizzard trailer and buzz baits.

Thae past has shown wiper chasers a zillion different lures that all catch fish, my question is what lure will I catch them on in the future?

I heard a story last year of some people that were casting from shore with white Jakes Lures, and knocking the wipers dead. I made told Old Coot about that story and I believe he actually trolled a jakes lure and got a wiper or 2 with it.

thanks I definetly have some spinners and some tube jigs I will give them a try. I personally like plastics a lot I caught one last year on a small gizzard shad colored lure with a yellow jig head.
