Ok explaine utahs way of thinking
#1
I here all the time that catfish are trash fish and that trout is the only fish worth fishing for?

I love fishing for bass and wipers over any trout any day. but freinds and family seem to think that trout are the only fish worth fishing for. I don't understand this. I find it much easier to catch a trout over a bass anyday and the bass fight harder!!!!

Is this the general way of thinking in utah or is that just people are afaird of change. Or are some people just lazy when it comes to fishing or closed minded to the pleasure of the bass

just wondering

I'd rather catch catfish or crappie than trout, but I'm probably in the minority here. I'm usuallyhappy catching anything, even carp.

im not sure that categorizing fisherman works well here. though i would say the majority of the fisherman in this state are trout fisherman. a simple explanation for that is that is the majority of our fisheries. same with someone from georgia or oklahome etc. they fish for what is prevelant in their state. i think mixed opinion become to heated in this subject on which fish is best etc. im not sure why the debate of trout versus bass is popular these days. to me each argument will have its points but never stands true to all situations. most people i talk to they say bass are better sportfish have only caught or fished for planter rainbows in reservoirs commonly refer to them as slime rockets and thats the opinion on trout. i would say a fish is a fish. if someone wants a specific style of fishing so be it but i dont care much for the attitudes of the whole state should be managed for the likes of what fisherman want. the lakes streams etc should be managed for what belongs there. my humble opinion.

I'm with you mateo. I love to catch fish, I don't care what they are. Even carp are fun to catch, can put up a fight and stretch your string. One thing that I enjoy is fishing a "warm water" fishery and see how many species of fish I can catch in the same day.

I love to fly fish for trout but I would eat a cat fish over a trout any day. Utah has evolved from a trout state to a multi species fishery in resent years with the new dams and re-thinking some management practices on some old reservoirs. This has opened up a whole new world of angling opportunities to us. If you can remember back a few years, we had a season for fishing and now we can fish all year round. This is just one of the reasons that I support the DWR like I do. We now have urban ponds and more open fishing waters than we have ever had before. I feel that Utah is going in a great direction with it's fishing concepts and I am elated with the ability to pursue many different species of fish all year around. I also don't mind paying more for a license to have these benefits. DKS

I think the stereotype comes from the fact that trout in general need clean, clear and cold water to survive. So the deduction that is made is that if the water quality isn't suitable for trout then the fish living in that dirty water probably aren't that good to eat and are therefore "trash fish". It's also a matter of what people have been raised to consider normal. I don't think it's anything to get too worked up about. Peoples views change as they try new things.

I personally prefer trout because I think they are the most beautiful fish and many of the best places to fish for them are some of the most beautiful places on the planet. I'd rather catch a colorful trout in the shadow of a mountain peak than a brown Mud Cat in Utah Lake. I also am happy every time I feel a fish on the end of my line but I would prefer that it was a 10 lb trout rather than a Cat Fish or Carp.

Anyone who says trout don't fight well has never felt the fury of a leaping wild Rainbow or a wise old Brown headed for his favorite log jam.

Just my 2 cents.

well with my dad being one of those trout loyalist, here is what he has said to me about it. the people here grew up with only trout, or manly trout anyways, so people learned to fish for trout, passed tht down to there kids and as such it has embedded itslef into there ,inds that trout are the only fish worth fishing for.

We could all come up with a million reasons why trout are better then bass or whatever but then again we could also come up with another million reasons why bass are better. Seems to me like everybody who likes bass hate or dislike trout and the same goes for trout fisherman.

I really couldn't care what I catch if it can fit it's hook in it's mouth. Golden shinners come to mind and I don't really care for them but that is just for a specific lake.

Northern Utah has different fish in every lake or so it seems but if you come down south your options are the basic trout, bass and sunfish.

I love fishn If I want to catch bass I dont mind making a trip to there native waters, Same goes for trout. If I lived in Florida and there was a cold water spring that COULD hold trout. It woulnt make any sense to plant Bonniville cuts just because they would survive and I used catch them bak home. Heres a consept use fishing to explore the country. Want a Snake river cut go to the snake ect ect. A trip to the snake river boy that would suck.lol

Friend, you should have seen what it was like here 15 yrs. ago! Deer Creek had the following on the trash cans; "please deposit perch here.", Largemouth bass were felt to be somehow associated with the Confederate states of America, walleye were "pike", and Smallies were from "Florida". I just moved back to Utah after a 14 yr. absence and Utahns have come a long way in regards to appreciation of warmwater species. It actually is kind of nice in this state to have the variety we do. You can get up, decide on a whim to go fishing and also on a whim go for a host of different species without burning more than a tank of gas. Colorado is like that too, but I think it not the case nationwide. We only lack an ocean.

I caught my first fish some 47 years ago when I was three on a stream east of Beaver. Back in those days it was trout or trash fish. Over the years the fisheries have changed and ever so slowly the citizens have started to relize that there is life beyond trout. There are still a lot of trout purists out there and a large new crop of catch & releasers is coming up. It's the in thing you know. Sort of like the English hunting grouse wearing tweed jackets. But all that is OK. There is lots of water for all of us. Like my late father-in-law would say, "What ever jerks your bobber under". Mr. J.

HA HA... thought it was a Utah Driver vs. California Driver subject... nah just kidding.

I have originally fished for trout when I was a small kid, and I get really tired of it because they end up belly up, even after release. It's like a sissy wimpy fish with a short lifespan, so I don't like to hurt the trout so I leave them alone and don't fish for them anymore. Just too boring...

Walleyes and bass tend to have a longer and better lifespan and they recover right away after being hooked. A lot more fun to see a bass fight very hard, yes they fight harder than trout, and walleyes are the CHALLENGE with skillful finessee.

It's like this, you are in a university with lots of mental thinking and writing, and then all of a sudden you go back to grade school math doing adding and subtracting, which is tooooo easy and boring. No challenge there... Walleye fishing is like that, you're in the upper etchelon of the fishing world, and trout is at the bottom... I love the hard challenge walleyes presents for me.

When i moved to utah all of my wife relatives and friends said that trout were the fish to go after! But in florida the only fishing shows and tournaments i ever saw were about bass and walleyes. So one day i went to yuba and low and behold i caught a waleye! It fought harder than a trout and even tasted better!
