Willard Questions
#1
Hey folks ... I heard that several rivers empty in to willard ... Is this true? and if so, is this a good place to catch wipers? I want to go up there when I get back and catch me my first wiper. Inlet water is usually a good place for catching fish. Just curious.

You asked "is this a good place to catch wipers?". Oh baby ... one of my favorite places to fish. And plenty of good wiper. When you get back, shoot me a PM. I would be honored to be the one helping you hook up with your first wiper. Willard wiper are a grand fish.

Willard is a nice place to catch wipers.

As far as water, there is really only 1 inlet. There is one small creek that comes in from the north marina, but it doesn't have much water in it. Anyways, water is pulled through a canal from the weber river. The canal begins just to the east of the freeway, shortly after the ogden and weber meet up, north of 12th street. This is the main "river" that enters Willard at the south marina.

Hope this info helps.

And the inlet's closed to fishing till April 24th. That's for the walleye spawn.

Is that a creek that comes in at the North marina or is it a spring? I know the water was running slowly all winter because they had to pump the water out when they dredged the channel. The water was coming out of the north east part of the marina, is that the same area where the creek comes in? WH2

There is actually two creeks and a spring on the east side of the lake,One is north of the swim beach and runs thru the camp ground, the other creek is about mid lake and comes in where them big trees are and the one in the marina is a spring, and the main channel at the south marina.

WH2,Let me know when the water is high enough to get my boat on and we will go try for some wipers or walleye,Maybe teroy can hang out with us too.

Later,FNF

Alrighty, lets see through a binocular from on a boat in the middle of the lake, look east toward the mountian directly in front of town (Willard), look to the top of the mountian, and you will see a gorgeous waterfall... now, you know where the water is coming from, a mountian spring.

If Old Coot isn't available, I'd be more than happy to take you out on Willard.

I'll even trade you a Willard Trip for a day chasing LMB on Utah Lake[Wink]

How about the walleye bite at Willard? Is it on yet? Do you use similar tactics as Utah Lake. And where is a good bet besides where the canal dumps in, which is closed anyway. Thanks.[Wink]

You can easily get your boat on the lake right now since they dredged the channel. The way Predator was talking someone had a boat on the lake last Saturday that was bigger
than his twenty footer. I talked to Teroy this week and he told me he was boatless this summer, I told him I'd be glad to take him out in my boat, so I'd have no problem if he wants to come along when we go out. I'm going to try and get out there Friday and give it a try, if the catching is any good maybe we can get out there soon. Usually the fishing is very slow until May but this warm weather has been heating the water up more than usual so you never know. WH2

I'm far from a walleye expert. I am comfortable with the wipers but, for me, the walleye is another story. This is the year for me to see if I can't change that. Last year I was out on Willard a lot this time of the year. I caught very little. Ive been told that a little later ... towards the end April .... would be your best bet for walleye. You can bet that I will be out there in April & May trying a few tricks I have been dreaming up.

All this Willard talk has got me all fired up for fishing! I have been kinda bummed out the last week or so with all this warm weather, I keep looking at the mountains and all the snow is dissappearing, I keep thinking that all this snow will melt and fill Willard right back up.

I Sadly put the snowmobile away this weekend and pulled out the boat, hooked up the water and she fired right up! If I remember right, Old Coot helped me catch my first wiper and he got me hooked on them, so every time I go out and the wife yells at me, I blame it on him, Old Coot I hope you never meet my wife, boy is she PISSED at you! lol I drove over to the south marina but the gate was closed, so I couldn't really see how the lake was looking, there sure was alot of water going into the lake from the spillway.

The Arthur V. Watkins Dam (AKA Willard Bay) is part of the Bureau of Reclamation's Weber Basin Project. You can read all about it at their Weber Basin Project web page.
