Hook Maintenance
#1
I am constantly changing my fishing hooks and lure hooks due to rust. Is there a product/technique for keeping them healthy and sharp?

1st off, I now keep my hooks in a sealed box (one with an 'O' ring around the lid. This helps quite a bit. I always rinse and air dry with fresh water AT Home. Something I've never tried but seen is to put some Baking Powder or Rice in the trays where lures and hooks are kept, both tend to absorb any moisture in the box, keeping the hooks relatively rust free.
Neither of these materials will hurt the lures (at least hard hooks and hard baits, not sure about the softbaits)
Thor

I've used coffee creamer for years, and I still have some Mustads from the 70's in good shape. Makes a mess when it gets moist, tho. I'll be trying instant rice and vitamin dessicant packs this season.

Also, I never put wet hooks back in my hook box. They go in a film cannister at the end of the day.

Fishslayer

Thanks for the tips. I am now opening my tackle box at home and letting it air dry. I am also cleaning my hooks/lures in dish detergent and rinsing well after a day of fishing, then letting them air dry before putting them away. They appear to be gleaming better. Will keep an eye on this method.

Never heard of the coffee creamer method. I am assuming this is the dry creamer? Anyway, opening my tacklebox and letting it air dry at the end of the fishing day. Also, cleaning my hooks/lures with some dish detergent and rinsing well, then letting them air dry before putting them away. They seem to be gleaming better. Will keep an eye on this method.

insted of washing in deturgent you may want to try this,

put some "Wessons Cooking Oil" (or equivelant) on a paper towel and hand wipe your hooks and lures. this will also help in setting your hooks while fishing.

http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/MESS6438/
Lookie See what the kids are up to.
Dave T. Yep. Dry creamer. Funny, the cheaper Creamora seems to work the best. The flavored stuff just seems to turn to goo really quick. If ya wanna see a mess, try stepping on the corner of your open 3700 hook box and flipping the contents all over the shag carpet! If fishing in salt water then a good rinse in fresh water before storage is a must. After fishing and rinsing I will use a little mist of WD/40 to displace the excess water on hooks and lures and let my tackle air dry after that. Have never tried the creamers or rice methods, will have to check that out also. I also carry a pocket hook sharpener and do periodically touch ups while fishing.

Good luck and keep fishing....Gamakatsu <*(((><

I would like to get a hook sharpener. I am using a thin sharpening stone and it is taking a long time and I can't get the hook level sharpened. Where is a good place to purchase a hook sharpener?

I purchased mine from my local tackle shop, I have seen numerous varieties from triangle shaped stones and files, flat tapered files with floating handles, and small hand held hones with grooves notched for hook points. My advice is ask a few of your tackle and bait shops, they are a very common item. They even make small portable electric ones, battery powered but I have not used the battery style personally.

Good luck and keep fishing....Gamakatsu <*(((>{
