Like I said earlier I am new to fishing and I have a questions that maybe you guys could help me with. Every morning on my way to work I drive by the planter pond in my town. Just about every morning there is a fellow there catching rainbow trout. I'll be honest, I have fished there before, but I just use spinners to practice and any fish I catch I put back. I have seen this fellow leave more than a couple of times with a string of fish. Maybe he goes home and he eats four trout every night.
Aren't those ponds for kids to learn to fish on? Also, isn't the possession limit the same as in hunting. You can only have four trout in your possession at a time regardless of it being a new day.

sounds simmilar to what happened to the coupple that was fishing willow pond 2 or 3 times a day. thy were taking the fish home and putting them in their freezer. they got busted and slapped with a big fin and some other reprimands im not sure of what they were though.

Sounds like he's a retired guy entertaining himself. I suspect he likely has a number of friends that he gives fish to as well as the ones he eats. I say more power to him. He's a true fellow angler with a love for the sport. Probably loves the taste of bows. I know people who think trout taste like lobster. I'm not one of them LMAO. If the state wants the water just for kids, they would state that in the regulations. They don't post waters kids only because they want fathers and uncles, etc. to be able to fish with yougsters while they're learning to fish. I'd be willing to bet he's on a fixed income and food and entertainment are in limited supply. If it really bothers you, take him to Utah Lake and let him load up on white bass. Just my dos centavos.

I appreciate your thoughts about it. If it is an accepted practice then I have no problem with it. I was just wondering how more experienced fisherman felt about it. I have read different thoughts about it on other websites and I don't know what to think

you may want to get a licence plate number and let the dwr know that you see him there every day.
these ponds are there for all to use and enjoy, and it only takes a few to mess it up for all. these ponds are a great place to get kids interested in fishing. My son wants to go fishing every day now that I took him a few times. I know that the dwr and south jordan police check kidney and miads ponds all the time but they need all of use to be their eyes, and ears. I would hate to tell my 3 year old no we can't go fishing there anymore. he would be devistated.

just to set the record strait I do not have a problem with the guy fishing every day, but need to make sure that he is not doing the same thing as the couple at willow pond were doing.

That old man, on the other hand, even though he's probably just living on a $900 p/mo social security check ('cause he didn't plan for retirement-sorry that's the financial planner side of me coming out) I have to wonder if he has 50 little rainbow trout in his freezer getting freezer burned. That couple that was busted last year at willow pond had like 260 something in their freezer[mad][mad]. Maybe this old guy does just give them away to family or friends everyday. If that's the case, and he doesn't have a stockpile in his freezer, than more power to him![angelic] But, for the sake of our kids learning to fish in town, I think I'd get his license plate number and make a call to the dwr poaching line on your way to work one morning just to be sure. If you donate fish to a unlicensed angler you'll need to provide a couple things. First you must write a note stating your donate such and such fish to who, the date and your licenses number, as well as your signature. If it's only you and your wife, which are both licensed, then you can donate 8 trout max.
There possession limit is still the same as you or me so if they get in trouble for a possession charge then you'll be in trouble three times as much.

but the kids in a family would have to count or these people I have seen wiht 10 kids out fishing and taking home forty fish would be in trouble as soon as they put them in the fridge.

The regs state that anyone under the legal fishing age does not need a licsense and may have in his/her possion one legal limit of fish. I know of no DWR officer who write a citation for a family fish fry! That is one of the purposes of fishing. The getting together and enjoying the sport and the fruits there of.

Thanks Cat-Man. I wasn't aware of that one. Seems it's a toss up on a kids only pond. It's cool to have something set aside just for kids. Sometimes I think a Dad, Mom etc will be more willing to take Jr. if they can fish. There is a cool kids spot here in Vernal called the Kids Canal. It's a canal that runs right through town and is stocked with bows regularly. There is even an occasional big brown out of Ashley Creek caught. My boy, K2) spends half is summer there ripping billy bass.

As long as the old man isn't keeping more than his limit or doesn't have a freezer full of fish I don't think anyone should give him a hard time. I don’t know anything about the place your talking about but to me it sounds like it was designed to be put-and-take pond.
At certain places that don’t have many fish to spare it bothers me when some guys keep a limit of fish on a regular basis. If they aren’t doing anything illegal I don’t think they should be labeled as unethical fisherman. What really bothers me is when a "purist" gives a guy a hard time for keeping legal fish. Most guys don't realize that many of the fish that they release will die later and if they catch enough fish then they are likely killing more fish every year than those guys that you see with a stringer of fish.
