Fishing is Getting Hot at Cutler Res.
#1
Fished the Bear River in Benson tonight with my two sons. Caught mostly carp. I did get one nice cat on carp meat. It was about 5 lbs.

Other reports from there: In the last couple of days my dad has caught several large cats the biggest being 7 lbs. My son also has caught several as big as 5 lbs. Also of interest was a story in the outdoor section of the Herald Journal about a man catching a 12 lb walleye in the Bear River this last week.

Way to go KJFN, nice fish. Did you try nightcrawlers or any other bait?
Wow, a 12lb walleye what a hog, did the article say what he was using to catch a eye that big?

It's nice to hear that at least one place is fishing well up here in Cache Valley. I've talked to a lot of people about a lot of places up here. Hyrum is slower than usual. Porcupine is slower than usual. Logan river is slower than usual. Newton is slower than usual. Mantua is slower than usual. Did I forget any places? I've been wanting to try catfishing at Cutler and the Bear river. Can anyone please suggest where to try? And don't worry about me emptying your favorite hole - I can't catch a cold butt naked in Alaska!

Curt, when we started out last night we were using nightcrawlers. We were catching small carp and a few mud cats. When we ran out of nightcrawler I switched to carp meat and that's when I caught the channel cat. I was using too small of hook and lost one before the one I landed.

My son and Dad have just been using nightcrawlers.

Loren, we were fishing where the river comes into a slough. My dad has even been fishing in the middle of the day and catching them. The water is only about 5 ft deep but is much warmer than the main river. My son has been fishing near the train bridge in newton and again where he fishes is fairly shallow. Most of the time we just use a nightcrawler.

Thanks KJFN! Forgive my ignorance, but is a slough kind of like a pond off of a river, or a swampy portion of slow moving river? (my dictionary was not very helpful)

Loren, don't feel bad. I had to check to see if what I spelled was what I thought it was. A slough is just as you said a pond or marsh off of the main channel of the river. Most of the sloughs in Benson will have little are no current to them unless the river is rising or falling. When the river rises the water will flow into them and when the river goes down the water will flow out. It is almost like a tidal flat in a bay. Most of the channels are not very wide and usually there is only one channel into a slough.

In the spring they warm up much faster than the river because they as so shallow (most are less than 8 ft deep). The fish will migrate into them for spawning because of the warmer water and little current. So a good area to fish is either on the river side of this channel (because fish will stage there) or on the slough side (because fish are coming and going through the channel).

Hope this helps.
