Fished the Lower Provo this weekend. It was slow at best. I caught a cutthroat on a bh black pheasant tail, and hooked a really nice brown on a flashback hares ear - he got off after several minutes. Caught one other little guy on a pheasant tail. I tried a spinning outfit after a while and caught a decent brown on the old red & white daredevil. Haven't paid any attention to this type of lure in years. Nice to see it still works even on the most worked over water. No surface action to speak of yet.

Fished the provo right above Olmstead in the big slow slick of water on Sunday night. I caught two browns that went about fifteen inches. I fished a plastic minnow bait on a dropshot rig. There was a little surface action there, but not much. Only saw one other person fishing that stretch but didn't see them catch anything. I only fished from seven thirty to eight thirty. I haven't fished there in years but it looked all sorts of fishy...... Still a beautiful spot to fish even with the highway right above you.

Fished the lower Provo today between 9:30-1:00 "I think it's called Canyon Dell park" with a friend, my daughter and his son. Nothing biting we saw fish but couldn't get them to take anything we threw at them. We tried worms, eggs, power bait, spinners, everything other then flies.
I've fished small creeks using worm and small split shots to slow the drift of the worm but that didn't work today, the fish just weren't interested.
Any tips on how to fish this river, or any river with lures?
I read an article in Field and Stream about casting a spinner up stream and reeling in down stream, but again that didn't work today.

Anyone want to teach me to fly fish?
I want to learn and make sure its something I will stick with before making the investment in equipment.

Clebreto, thats how I fish when I fish a spinner or any lure for that matter. Its more natural to the fish I think. Anyway, stick with it, you have the right idea...the next step is eliminating unproductive water which means you will have to figure out where the fish hold, and make pretty precise casts to bring that spinner right through their comfort zone. If you get good at that, you will catch fish up there. I started out fishing mepps spinners and I caught a ton of fish on the Provo when i lived down there. Best of luck to you..... If you fish and deep slow spots....fish slow.....so slow that you can barely feel the blade turning on your spinner and then you will know you are down with the big boys. Good luck!!!

I am a new fly fisherman and don't know all the landmarks on the Provo. How do you find out where the Olmstead Bridge is for example?

Chinook,
The Olmstead Diversion dam (not a bridge) is about a mile to a mile and a half upstream from Bridal Veil Falls. The road goes up to a level above the river. When it comes back down you are just past the diversion dam. If you look to your right as you come back down you will see a pond-like area on the river. That is caused by the diversion dam. There is a small concrete work house/shed there too. Anything upstream from there has special regulations. If you have any other questions about that section let me know.

I'd be willing to hook up with you sometime and introduce you to fly fishing. I certainly don't claim to be the master but do it a lot. I'll be busy for the next couple of weeks with work but after that we could arrange a time.
