Green below Fontenelle
#1
I fished the Green below Fontenelle over the weekend, and, as usual, the winds were howling. It is very frustrating, if not impossible, to flyfish in those conditions. I love that stretch of river, but it seems more often than not the winds blow like a hurricane. Does anyone else here fish that river, and if so, have you figured out the weather patterns that produce less wind up there?

the wind blows no matter what i think. i dont fly fish so i use a technique that fits the environment down there. i feel your pain the wind is quite annoying sometimes and that has to be one of the greatest places for it to come and just ruin all the fun. i would say put some sinking line on if you havent already.

I fly fish that section of river quite often. What I have found out about this section of river is this: don't go unprepared. Instead of taking the usual 4 or 5 weight rod, take something heavy duty--I use a 7 weight because it really makes it easier to cast with the wind. Also, I always take spinning gear if I am struggling too much with the wind. As far as weather patterns go, about the best you can do is hope for the best--the wind is usually going to blow. But, get on the river early and you can usually have a couple hours of calm weather.
