Went to the Gorge Thursday the 20th. It blew bad Thurday night. Friday morning was fine weather. We caught 3 Macs (see the Pics). My son wanted to go fly fish the Green, so we did that in the afternoon. He had a few hits but did,nt catch anything. There were alot of people(at least by my standards). Saturday morning the weather was OK until 10:30 then the rain and lighting hit. The Macs would'nt bite and I need to get home. We had a fun trip. I also enclosed two pictures of Macs I caught last year (gorge4 and gorge5).

Hey Bearlakemack,
I like to jig for them, but I have better luck trolling on the bottom with steel line. The steel line technique was taught to me by a friend, and I promised I would'nt tell anyone else the secret. Besides if I told anyone else my friend would kill me. It was just great to get away from work for a while. I have never fished Bear Lake for Macs. It is a beautiful place. Some of my early ancestors settled Franklin Idaho. I have fished Fish Lake for Lake trout and caught some pretty nice fish there as well. Well you have a great day!!!

90 bucks is actually pretty cheap for a guide, was it a full day? Can you give us a hint as to who the guide was so we'll know. I can recomend an excellent guide for the gorge, he's more expensive but you'll catch the big ones. By the way nice pics what did the biggest one weigh?

Nice fish!
I just spent 3 days there myself. I didnt far so well but we arrived Saturday. I think the cold front had a lot to do with lock-jaw we put up with. I know the thumping we put up with in the tubes wasn't worth the effort made during two very windy days. We mainly jigged for them. Yesterday was nice though so I basically laid on a rock in the sun like a lizzard and worked the bow's with a mellow and crawler. Yeah it was rough, but some one had to do it. [sly]

Those are some really great fish! Thanks for sharing the pics.
I met a man who used steel line and big lures (probably the same as you), who has caught thousands of them. His health is unfortunately not good enough to let him fish any more, but he let me in on his little secret. I just don't have a boat, or the setup to go get them. Good luck on your next trip out.

A total of 4 bows caught for eatin'. The biggest was 18" but I got stuck catching the other 3. [laugh]
Oh well,, I had a great time and the trip was worth every thing I was put through, including the wind and rain. Oh yeah, and including the blown heater hose on the pickup Sunday.[crazy] 15 minutes later we were off and exploring again while hoping the weather would settle down.

Nice macs,i think the weather lately has made a major difference in fishing. We were on the gorge saturday and did very good on the small mac's til about noon when the weather changed. As some one that has paided for a guide and has done a little guide work on the side,i can understand where your comeing from. The best guide in the world cant garuntee that you will catch fish,if he does i would be weary.
He can take you out,put you in the right spot, with the right tackle, and try to put the odds in your favor. But if the fish aren't hitting it can be tough fishing.Belive me if he cares about his business,he want's you to catch fish.Word of mouth is a very vital tool to a customer based business.
Too bad he didnt aleast offer a discount on a booking in the furture.
