Beginner at Willard
#1
Thinking to take the porta-bote out to Willard next week. I have never fished there, but I guess I would like to troll for the Wipers that I see all you guys catching. So what do I need to know before I go? From the posts I see that producer lures work trolled at 3mph out in the middle. Is there anywhere in Cache Valley to get the lures that work well at Willard; and if not, where is the closest place that has them? What lb test line should I troll with? Leaded line or spinning rods? How is the best way to rig the set up? I can launch the porta-bote anywhere, where would be the best place to launch? I will continue to review old posts, but any specific advice is much appreciated. PM if desired. Thanks in advance!

I think you'd be best to lauch from the south marina. Head west until you reach about 10 feet of water and then troll north or south.

Pretty much any rod will do, but stiffer is a little better. I'd use heavy line, at least 8lb test. They are very aggressive and they fight very hard. I've seen them strip off split rings and straighten out trebles. Just long line it when you troll.

As for where to buy them in the Cache valley...I don't know. Sorry.

Good luck and have fun.

I'm sorry that I don't have specifics but Walmart has a lot of lures and so does Garts. Al's has a few but not many. But probably the best place to try is Cusom Sports LC, a fishing tackle shop at 207 W 3700 N in Hyde Park. I've only been there once and the guy there seemed to really know his stuff.

Hooked in Kaysville has Producers but I think they are out of the blue back prism shad. Several different colors have been working this year so just ask them at the store. Sportsmans had them a while back but were out of them last week. A couple of guys use black or brown back shad raps by Rapala, some use Wallydivers and rattle traps. Look in the Willard archives for a lot more info. I never troll with less than 12 lb test mono. and a medium action rod, I usually use a spinning reel but a bait caster will also work fine. I tie my main line to a swivel, then two or three feet of leader(12lb), then I tie to the lure. It depends, if you want to pay the launch fee or not but the North marina is closer to you if you live in Cache valley. WH2

[red]Launch Fee? Don't tell me they have tagged on something extra or are you just talking about the $9.00 day use fee? [/red]

No, just the day use fee, I thought he might be able to launch from the shore in the S/W if he did not want to pay the fee. WH2

[red]Thanks, Heck, I was worried they added some toll both to help finance the dredging. I'll have to wander over to that SW side and see what is there. That portabote is quite a thing, it is designed to launch away from the crowds. [/red]

Hey, Porta-Homer!

Come by the place and I'll fix you up with a producer. Rattle Traps, Rattlin' Shad, and most any lipless crankbaits will work. Also the Shad Raps, Smithwick Rattlin' Rogues, and Storm Thundersticks catch plenty of fish.
