Mantua Bluegills!!!!
#1
Just thought i would share with you all on what i have found out its goin on up at Mantua. We have been up there several nights in the last week wanting to rip the lips off of some good healthy Large mouths. What we have found isn't depressing but actually a bit a weather frustration instead. The Bass have made thier beds and become disoriented with the many changes in the weather and conditions, we have located some rather impressive bass out deeper about 30-40 ft from shoreline. But the better action comes about 8:00 just as the annoying fly hatch comes into full affect. The bass have been coming into the shoreline for a last minute dinner snack. The Bluegills are very impressive this year. I have really caught some slabs and i think they are just getting started. I have yet to get on the water in the A.M. but just a bit of recommendation the best action came in the last few hours of daylight. Hope this helps others enjoy the lake. Good fish'N.

Thanks for the great report. Sounds like you've got Mantua figured right out! What were you using to haul in those slab gills? Also, welcome to the site!

The bluegills were only interested in White or White/Chartrues Shrimpos. They look similar to a ratfinkie ice jig although they have a staight tail. I also caught them on a small white jig with a bug body. I don't know the name of it but they sure liked it. the blue's have such a good layer of teeth that you may want to plan a head with extras! Ha Ha Ha!

Hey! Those "offshore" bass are a secret.

Most bass fishermen have the mentality that the bass hug the shoreline. But the lake is full of weed edges where a wall of weeds meets open water 1/4 mile off the shore. Those big toad largemouth love to sit just inside the weed lines and look into the open water pockets.

I have been fishing them out there the last couple years and loving it.

First thing 90% of your bass fishermen do up there is run to the east side and start casting to the bank. Its just thier first instict. It is hard to break instinct and fish those edges since it doesnt seem right. But it doesnt take many nice fish to change that attitude.

Can't wait to get up there with the fly rod. I love seeing those fish come up for the top water action.
