Mabey Pond report 6-12-04
#1
Went to a little activity with my kids at the clearfield youth rec center. Caught a couple small cats around a lb to a lb and a half. We kept one to eat. It was tons of fun for the kids. Caught the fish on worms as well as the several bluegill we caught.

Thanks for the report. Were you fishing on the bottom, or under a bobber?

I was at Maybe pond Sunday afternoon. There were a couple of guys fishing on the bottom with worms. They had gotten2 each when I left. I was told by a DWR employee that they stocked that pond with 3 to 8 lb. cats about 2 weeks ago.

The thing that gets me is the garbage around this lake. Someone had gotten a good size cat. Cleaned it right by the bank and left the remains in a gargabe bag, sitting right where they cleaned it. Alot of kids fish this area and it was pretty discusting. They have garbage cans sitting right there. There is so much garbage around this lake, I can't believeit. I am afraid that if people don't start picking things up they will close this pond again. It is right near my home so I enjoy fishing it in the evenings with the grandkids. It has alot of little blue gill and it keeps the little ones interested in fishing, but lately I don't want to take them there because of the mess they have to deal with.I don't understand why people are so lazy, why can't they clean up their mess.

I agree with you, it sure is a shame when people can't take a few minutes to take the garbage to a can that is so close. Do you think most of the garbage is left by kids? I know adults leave garbage but it seem when kids are fishing by their self, with no adult, they leave a lot garbage laying around. I think that problem could be solved if more parents would take their kids and show them the right way.

Some of it was left by kids no doubt. I have seen adults leave their empty soda bottles and what ever also. I have on a few occasions mentioned to them as they were getting into their cars that they forgot something and they look at me like what. I tell them their garbage and being a little embarresed, they pick it up.My son says that I embarres him when I do that, I tell him oh well maybe they won't do it next time.Because I have embarresed them in front of their kids. I know we have had alot of discussion on this board about garbage left behind and it is one of my pet peve's.

Peave away, if it gets the required attention no need to stop.

Went back to the pond last night. It was no surprise that the remains of the cats were still there but had been drug out of the garbage bag and left on the bank to stink and attrack flies. Took with me some rubber gloves and a big garbage bag. I knew I would have to clean up the mess so my grandkids could fish. My youngest grandson who is 2 1/2 loves to fish there and I knew he would want to mess with the garbage along the edge.

They did get alot of bluegill. There were 2 guys fishing for cats that got some. I noticed they were using shrimp with a worm on the bottom. The one guy told me they were there Saturday and had a ball catching about 40 cats. I wonder if he is aware of the regs. there. 4 fish limit. I think someone needs to check on this pond more often or the kids won't have anything to fish for except the blue gill.I have been checked for my fishing license once there. It was by a Clearfield policeman. I fish this pond quiet regular. I think I might email the DWR to see if they can check this area a little more.I would be happy if they made that pond a kids only pond.I couldn't fish it then but at least the kids in the area would have chance to without all the beer cans and stuff left behind.Just my 2 cents worth.

Hello Icefool

I go to Mabey Pond quite often myself and the past four weeks I have been check DWR twice by the same officer. He is really a nice guy, unless you doing something wrong then he will jack you up. I an also tired of seeing all that trash laying around as well. I am going to start taking a trash bag and pickup some trash while I am fishing, it might be like spitting into the wind but it might help.

Only 5 1/2 months to ice[Wink].

Hi Hydrotech. yes I have seen you over there fishing before. Do you still fish the same area by the buildings?I am glad to hear they are checking things. I know the guys that were there yesterday were using little bluegill to get cats also. They started doing that just as I was leaving.

I do think it is just blowing in the wind. But at least I feel a little better about the garbage if I pick some of it up. The only thing is alot of it is out in the water and I thought about taking a rake or something to get it out, but then with all the guck[weeds] that is in the water it would probably stink.Maybe see you there.
Can't wait for hard water.

Aren't bluegill considered gamefish? I think it's illegal to use them or their parts for bait. Am I wrong?

I was fishing on the bottom. I flung it out there close to half way. About 35 to 40 yards from shore. I was using worms.

The filth is pretty bad. It really is a shame that people cant pick up after themselves. The side by the community rec center isnt so bad though.
