Interesting :| Bet you have never caught a football when you have gone Salmon fishing
This is from our pond. Our neighbor saw a ball bouncing around kind of strange like and when he went to investigate, it was a flathead catfish with a child's basketball stuck in its mouth and the pictures tell the rest of the story. His wife did have to cut the ball in order to deflate the ball and release the catfish.[/size]

Having grown up in South Carolina for 18 years, I saw a ton of monster catfish. Different Species grow to different sizes, but I have seen many cats caught in the range of 30-75 pounds. The biggest I have caught was 55 pounds out of the Santee Cooper River system in South Carolina. The southern states are famous for their big kitties.

10 - 1 someone did that to the fish. I know catfish will eat anything but they're bottom feeders (mostly) and a ball filled with air floats. I see it as kind of like bobbing for apples. I think it's unlikely that it happened naturally.

[cool][blue][size 1]I wouldn't bet that flathead didn't try to eat that ball. They are not the stereotypical catfish...bottomfeeders. They eat live food and will chase down and eat almost anything that does not eat them first. The big cat specialists often bait them with carp or other fish up to four or five pounds.[/size][/blue]
[#0000ff][size 1]I have seen big flatheads take other fish right on the surface. Early in the morning, on one of my favorite southern Arizona lakes, I have just about been scared out of my float tube when a huge flathead crashed the surface close by to kill a trout or bass that wasn't paying attention.[/size][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][size 1]In most parts of the country, knowledgeable catfish folks would never take a flathead that size and then release it with a ball in it's mouth. They are too good on the table. Nobody does C&R on flatheads. My opinion is that they are some of the best eating fish period.[/size][/#0000ff]

We had a friend back in South Carolina that had some monster cats planted in his small pond. They used to come up and feed off the top of the water all the time, so it's not out of the ordinary for a cat to come to the top like that.
