Red Hot Scofield
#1
Last Friday (June 11th), 3 of us headed up to Scofield with the boat. We launched at 6:30 a.m. at the second State Park by the dam and loaded back up at 3:00 p.m. At the end of the day we had caught and landed 77 fish! We trolled for all but 1/2 hour of the day. It didn't seem to matter what we trolled the fish smacked it. We started off trolling the rocky East shore line. About 10:00 we moved out to the island and bait fished for about 1/2 hour and caught several fish on power bait while anchored. We got bored and went back to trolling. We trolled around the island and caught fish on a regular and consistent basis. We kept circling the island about 30 yards from shore.

I was trolling a triple teaser, one guy was trolling a needle fish and the other guy was trolling a super duper. We were all getting fish. I caught 27 fish on 9 different lures. One of the hottest things working was trolling a sparkling woolly bugger fly. The one guy caught 15 fish just off of that fly. We were using regular spin rods and mono line with a 1/4 ounce weight and a swivel. Each of us kept changing our lures to see what would happen. Everything was working. However lures with orange and spots seemed to be hot. I had a rainbow Thomas lure that was working great until a nice fish snapped my line after catching six fish on it.

The fish were almost all within the same size - 12" - 16" and 1 - 1 1/2 lbs. They were fat footballs and fought hard. We did catch 4 fish that went 19" and 2 1/2 lbs. The bigger fish we found we at the far South end of the lake in the shallow water. We could see the bottom.

Out of those 77 fish we caught 2 cutts and the rest were bows.

[cool]What a great day of fishin! Good on ya... I was there last weekend and had a blast trolling too.. Sounds like weekdays might be the way to go. The lake was absolutely crowded on sat. and sun. Probably at least 50 boats. Still had fun and lots of fish to be caught. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds like a fun day on the water. I love fishing Scofield even though I am usually sitting on the shore. I have taken my wife and son twice in past two weeks and we have done great from the shore on the east side. Each time we would use a crawfish trap and catch minnows. We would then throw them out with some weight and just let them sit on the bottom. We did not have to sit very long between casts to catch fish. We brought home five fish. Of all the fish we caught the smallest was over two pounds and the largest was about four pounds. I have never fished with minnows until these trips and I am amazed at the size of fish we were catching. We didn't catch any small fish and had several break off our six and eight pound test lines on my crappy reel.

I have included some pictures of our fish and my little boy that would not stop making faces when I wanted to take some pictures. I am also including some great sunset pictures that made the trip all the better. On the first trip we had well over 100 pelicans fly by and land on the water near us. I tried to take some pictures of them but they didn't turn out very good so I'm only including one that was part of the early sunset. You can only see a handful of the pelicans in the picture. I hope the pictures turn out good. I can't wait to get back out to play with some more minnows and big fish.

Hey fishlovr, those are some cool pictures! And some dandy fish. I want to get up to Scofield soon too, it's one of my favorite lakes. I noticed the Mitchell X cap, are you in Utah County? I have some similar pictures of the sunset at Scofield that I took on the 4th of July one year. We were shore fishing while waiting for the fireworks to be shot off from the island. The sunset was as spectacular as the fireworks!

[cool]Nice pics, fishluvr. Glad the minnow thing was workin good for ya. Hey quick question: were you having any luck for the crawdads, or were you not using the traps really for that (just for the minnows)? I was just wondering if the dads are starting to show up yet.

Nice pictures. I especially like the white pelicans since I went to Newcastle to see a extremely rare brown pelican, well for Utah.

MisterCompletely:

The Mitchell X cap is from a co-worker who is one of the Mitchell brothers. He got tired of the family business fights and changed careers. I didn't know they did fireworks up at Scofield on the 4th. Do they do this every year? If so I may have to take the fam up for an evening fishing trip. Let me know when and where they do the fireworks.

Out4Trout:

I have yet to catch a crawfish in the traps so far this year. I have used the traps three times so far and haven't caught one in it yet. Last year, mid summer, there were so many we had a feast. The first trip to Scofield I had a crawfish cross my line as it was lying on the bottom. His feet got caught up in it and I reeled him in. He was about 20 feet from my dead minnow. The last trip a friend of mine also reeled one in on his line. None in the trap but a couple on fishing lines. We also saw some close to shore that you could pick up but they sure didn't want to go in the traps.

Hedqesd:

The pelicans were definitely a treat. I have seen a lot before but none flying in flocks like these ones did. They were beautiful. I can't say as I have seen a brown one but these white ones are sure pretty. I am assuming that when you say Newcastle you are referring to somewhere in the U.S. The only Newcastle I know of is a city in England.

As far as I know they still shoot the fireworks off from the island at Scofield every year. A lot of people go out near the island in their boats to fish and watch the fireworks, but it's great from the shore, too. You could call the park at 435-448-9449 for more info.
