My little bro and I went fishing last night at the Lindon Harbor and had great success. He caught 7 really nice sized mud cats and a 2 lb mud cat. I caught 3 decent sized mud cats and a 3 1/2 pound channel. Last year i had my line snapped by a fish at utah lake so this time i came prepared with 30 lb spiderwire and a heavy action rod. If a fish broke that line he deserved to get away. So, does anyone else feel really stupid when they take someone along and you both use the same stuff and they catch more fish than you? That always seems to happen to me, especially when you take children along with you. Its fun stuff though.

I had a funny day today at Utah Lake. I took my kayak out around noon until 5. I hooked into one big catfish in front of the Lindon boat harbor. It took me about 10 minutes to get it alongside the kayak.
I don't know what kind it was because i'm new to catfish fishing (this was my first catfish) but it had a white underbelly with a little yellow tinge and grayish blue skin. I couldn't get it into the kayak because I had left my net at home but I laid it against my paddle to get a rough estimate. Came out to around 24".
Ended up losing it while trying to get it out of the water when my line slipped through the tiny gap in the eye of the hook. It was a great first catfish though.
When I was paddling back I saw a swimming bobber so I paddled up next to it and picked it up and there was about a 12" cat on the other end. Hook was too deep so I just cut the line off and let it go.
Very fun day. I think I'm hooked on these cats now.

Sounds like a fun time kittie fishing. What were you using for bait and were you on the bottom or off the top?

I was using a strip of carp meat on a 2/0 hook about 2 feet below a slip sinker and swivel so fishing off the bottom. Had a drift sock out on the kayak to slow myself down a bit and just let the wind carry me around.

At 24 inches you're almost guaranteed it was a channel cat. I've never seen a mudcat over 15 inches or so.
Channels have a deeply forked tail, and sometimes have a few darkspots on them. Bullheads (mudcats) have a practically square tail. Both can be very similar in color, so it's not a good indication of species. However, usually the bullheads are greener with a bright yellow belly but not always.
