Hit Deer Creek early Sat. morning with my older brother who was down from Logan on Sat. He's just getting back into fishing after many years of absence due to sports and whatnot, so I thought we could go get some smallies up at Deer Creek.
We got up there about 6:45 only to realize we shoulda been there 2 hours earlier cause it gets light so early and the sun was already up. We went around in the shade on the island and set up on the shore.
I wanted to make sure I caught something at least, so I tossed out a worm below a bobber to get a dink to start me off right. Caught a 5 inch smallie after a few minutes. Then I tied on a senko. Started getting hits every single cast, and watched a few of them strike it since they followed it in fairly close most times. After watching one follow it in, and I thought it turned away, I started reeling fast and pulled it out of the water, suddenly, a 10 inch smallie launched out of the water after it, grabbed it in midair but didn't get hooked and it fell back into the water. It must've came vertically about a foot out of the water, and horizontally about 3 feet. It was awesome! This is the first time I've actually ever used senkos and now I'm hooked for sure!!! Finally I hooked a 7 inch smallie with the senko. My brother then tied one on too and started getting hits, but he couldn't hook them. He's never caught a bass before.
Then I casted out to a deep spot where I think there was some structure cause my bro had kept snagging over there. On the drop, WHAM! It got hit hard. I set the hook hard and had to reel in for awhile since he was way out there. This is what he was:

I estimate him at about 3 lbs. My biggest largemouth that I've ever caught. I was thrilled. So I tossed back out to the exact same spot after taking a couple of pictures and safely releasing him. I let it drop to the bottom, then when it stops I try to lift it back off the bottom but it was stuck. I thought I had a snag, but you never take chances, so I set the hook hard. It didn't move an inch. I though, dang I got a snag. Still, I yelled to my bro, "I got one!", then "Just kidding, it's a snag". Then suddenly my snag took off! "No I really do have one!" I yelled. I fought him hard for a few minutes, go him close and just about crapped my pants! It was another bucketmouth, this one a lot bigger than the first! I'd estimate him between 4 and 5 lbs! I just stared at him thrashing around in front of me when suddenly POP! the hook shot out of his mouth. He slowly turned around, then slowly swam back into the deep. I just sat and watched him and stared in disbelief! I was so mad I couldn't get a picture of that one.
After that I caught a couple more smallies, around 10". My poor brother ended up never catching any. We had fun though, that's for sure.
We left around 9:00 after one too many idiots drove right in front of us setting up waterskis or wakeboards.
