No love lost at Deer Creek 6/21/04
#1
After a long day of studying for one of my class, I decided that I would hit Deer Creek this evening for those smallies. Hit the island by seven PM since sun would go down much later (first day of the summer is the longest day of the year) so I stayed til 9:45 pm. I caught 16 smallies, lots of bites but nothing major, just regular dinks. There was three bites that I swear that they were huge smallies but they spat it out of their mouths. I had fun catching them .

Oh yeah I snagged a waterskier... ooops... no not really remorseful about that as the boat was rounding around the island less tham 100 feet from my float tube full blast creating noxious waves that rocked my tube. I didn't like that so I yelled some crap at them to stay the heck away like a 150 feet away from me and to give abit respect. The boat came around the island again and did it again I was sooooo mad, that I yelled some stuff that a kid shouldn't hear... and the boat came back slowed down to look at me less than 20 feet and I was directly behind the boat when the boat with three guys (wakeboarders) jumpstarted and spat water all over me. I was sooo Angry... I had a feeling the boat would come back again... so I rigged a bobbler with sinker, and a #2 hook with senko... so I casted that out to more than 100 feet... I left it there, sure enough 15 minutes later, that same boat came back roaring by me, I made sure the boat passed me, then I lifted my rod high to start reeling it in before the wakeboarder could pass me, my hook caught the wakeboarder on the ankle, line broke off and it stayed embedded in his ankle... One of the guys said he was going to call the cops on me. I smirked at them and shrugged, "go ahead see if I care..." They left talking on the cell phone and the cop came down to me on his boat with the boaters about 25 minutes later...

The cop asked me if I did it on purpose... Well I said, "How far do you think a man can cast his line? Less than 150 feet or more than 150 feet?" He replied that it "definitely be less than 150 feet..." I said " Ahhhh, then why is this boat going so fast and less than 150 feet, creating big waves that can tip people over", which is a clear violation of the law. I also mentioned to the cop that the boat came back and spat water all over me as they shot out of the hole. I could tell the boaters were nervous as I was correct as I was still wet. The cops let me go and he gave the boat owner a ticket.... Serves them right and crime does not pay!

Warning to all waterskiers and wakeboarders, stay the heck away from the float tubers and stay on the west side of Deer Creek where there are nobody! I don't understand why those people feel the need to have big cojones to come and ski near other fishermen who are just minding their own business. I am not your audience. I could care less if you are a world famous skier or wakeboarder, just simply not interested in your showboating. Go somewhere else more desolated please!

I feel bad for the guy with the fish hook impaled on his ankle, but they called the cops on themselves! LOL

Your story reminds me of an experience at Jordanelle years ago. My son and I were bank fishing the point in the Rockcliff area where the Provo River enters Jordanelle when two float tubers came up and launched on the river above us and then proceeded to float right into where we were fishing with our Powerbait on treble hooks floating it off the bottom. I'll be danged if one of the tubers got snagged in my line and my treble hook stuck in his waders. His buddy had to come and cut off my line to get the hook out of his waders. I was so mad by then that I yelled out to them "we didn't get skunked today, at least we caught us a float tuber".

I have spent a fair amount of time in a tube myself, and I appreciate it if I am given some room and consideration. Last week I was trolling the bank at Sublette Reservoir in Idaho and there were so many bank fisherman that I didn't want to get too close to that I beached the boat and bank fished myself. How close is too close to bank fishermen when you are in a boat? Did you say the Utah law is 150 feet? Acey

The Utah Law applies to wakeless speed within 150 feet of anybody in a canoe, inflatables, tubes, or simply another boat (in the water only). I don't know anything about the law regarding people on the shoreline since they aren't affected by the waves brought on by a boat.

However, I do pay respect and use commonsense while float tubing around shore fishermen. I just stay away from them to give them lots of space. I like to think that those poor shorefishermen do have more rights since they are landlocked, and float tubers have all that open water to themselves. So I think those float tubers that you encountered at Jordanelle were in the wrong. They should have given you space, or at least ask you where your line is located so to stay clear of that area.

This catch ought to win you the fuzzyfisher challenge by itself! Great job, and great thinking under duress.

Utah Law [73-18-15.1(10)] reads (quoting from the Utah Fishing Proclamation):

The operator of any vessel may not exceed a wakeless (idle) speed when: within 150 feet of another vessel, a person in or floating on the water, a water skier being towed by another boat, a shore fisherman, a launching ramp, a dock, or a designated swimming area; or in an area designated as a wakeless speed area. Remember, the operator of a mortorboat is responsible for any damage or injury caused by the wake produced by the operator's motorboat."

[cool][blue]Waytago Paul. My kinda dude. I gots lots of stories of watercraft harrassment and "payback". These include using wrist rockets and marbles. Got busted for cracking boat windshields though, even though I had a witness that verified that I only shot when the boat was headed straight for me. Also narrowly avoided severe penalties for shooting a skier in the butt at close range as he showered me with water.[/blue]

[#0000ff]My best story is about hauling a guy off his Jet Ski as he roared between me and the bank, where I was casting from my float tube. I often carry one rod rigged and ready with a heavy old funky bass lure...bristling with trebles. Just showing it can be a deterrent. But, on that occasion, I had to fire across the guy's bow and yanked the lure back. It wrapped around his wrists and hooked both line and flesh. About hauled me out of the tube too, but he came off the craft. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The guy was screaming about retribution and I took out my fillet knife and told him he couldn't report me from the bottom of the lake. I used the knife to cut the line and kicked on down the shoreline as the guy worked his way over to the idling jet ski. He managed to get aboard and roared off. I didn't wait around for the rangers to show up, but I imagine I could have talked my way out of it. After all, how would the guy explain getting close enough for me to hit him with a cast.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There have been far too many times, both in float tubes and in fishing boats when the "power squadrons" seem to delight in using fishermen as slalom buoys. No good reason for it, and there is no good way to reason with thrill seeking idiots.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Sadly, there is no body of water or no state that has an exclusive on the yearly bloom of whackyism. You find them everywhere. Sometimes it gets worse than others. it is just too bad there are not more patrols and more publicised fines for operating outside the boundaries of good sportsmanship and safe watercraft operation.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have mellowed out a bit in my old age and tend to simply shut down and move out when confronted by these idiots. It doesn't matter how big and bad you are if somebody decides to ram you or is carrying a weapon and you are not. I prefer to time my trips when they are less likely to be on the water, or to go where they are not as likely to show up. It does limit my choices but it also keeps the blood pressure down.[/#0000ff]

Ha ha ha... Thanks Senkonate! It's a honor to accept this trophy from you. I've printed it out and posted on my garage wall with other fish photos.

Iconoclastic in webster dictionary means the destroyer of beleivers... I think I will keep that name LOL.

Southernman!!! Long time no see on this board. Good to hear from you!

Your definition of Iconoclastic is 100% correct. I like to destroy the church of fish in all lakes, ponds, reserviors, turn those fishes' heads in disbelief as I whack the living beejeepers out of them... on the other hand, I destroy the home lakes of waterskiers and wakeboarders.... knock them into disbelief as was the case yesterday. Bwhahahaha...

I originally signed up on BFT as eyeconoclasticPaul but it was too long and BFT wouldn't accept the name with more than 16 letters, so I shortened it to I in place of eye.... in honor of walleyes... LOL.

I have been saying this for the last few weeks about these Aholes that have no respect for others on the water.I am glad you did what you did. They should realize that if they had tipped you over you could have drowned in your float tube.I dont know why these types of water skiers think there so cool and cause trouble for others.Oh well serves them right!!I thought Jordanelle was bad but it seems DC is getting that way to.Is the rule 150ft from other boats if possible? I can understand when theres alot of boats on the water things can be tight and we all have to just make the best of it,but theres no excuse for what those guys did to a guy on a tube.
