South west end of utah lake questions.
#1
I am heading to Nutty Putty mine trail or little Moab, either way the south west end of utah lake in the morning. I want to do some fishing as well. What should I use and where should I go? I am willing to take a detour along the way as long as I can get some fishing in. I am heading out at 8:30 am Saturday the 19th. One big question I have is if I hook into a catfish, how on earth do I handle and clean the ugly thing? Let me know guys.

To handle a catfish, just be aware of the three barbs on their dorsal and pectoral fins. I grab them from the top under the dorsal fin and keep my fingers from the pectoral fin barbs.

To clean, you can gut them like a trout and cut their heads off. But you'll need pliars to skin them. Or fillet them. They're a little harder to fillet than a trout but worth the effort. And they're far better to eat than a trout.

I usually grab them in the "armpits". Just under the pectoral fins. They'll stiffen up those fins really tight with the barb pointing almost straight out. It's a very stable place to hold them from, and they won't be able to stab you that way.

I wouldn't bother trying to skin catfish it's extremely tough. I'd just fillet them and be done with it.

If you are going by way of I-15, I would suggest you try fishing Lincoln Beach. If you are going along the western side of Utah Lake, I read reports of people fishing The Knolls. BTW - Catfish are not ugly -- they are beautiful!
