Fished for a couple hours tonight and guess what I caught. GOLDEN SHINERS. What the heck are those stupid people thinking. This lake has been artificial long enough nobody can play the ignorance card. Well that and the live bait thing.
Well I was wondering what you guys think about this new situation/problem?
I'll post a few pictures tomorrow. Oh the fishing was on the slow side for trout but the shiners were more then willing.

I'd rather deal with Walleye and Perch then Shiners. They are just a pain in @#$.
This isn't bucket biologist who do this. It's stupid bait fisherman or as Tom P. puts it NEVADA fisherman. BFT guest forum.

yes, theres all those pesky stands all along I-15 right at the border in pahrump with huge signs saying "RED SHINERS FOR SALE - GET YOUR SHINERS HERE!"
[crazy]
if they're bringing them in from nevada i dont know where their gettin 'em . .they'd have to cast their nets in some lake (we're the driest state in the US, not many lakes) and transport them hundreds of miles pretty much . . i just cant see it, I'm not sure if these are in lake mead, i thought there was just threadfin shad there. More probable is they got em from newcastle, are they in Quail Creek?

southernman -- I don't want to start a Utah vs. Nevada fight here, but I am on the side of hedges here. Where do you think the Golden Shiners in Newcastle came from? And those in Upper and Lower Enterprise?. Nevada.
I haven't had a chance to speak with the DWR concerning the shiners in Kolob that hedges has seen. I know that there used to be red-side shiners in Kolob. I am not saying that hedges is wrong (I sure as Hell hope he is), but I have a bad feeling he isn't. I will be speaking with the southern regional aquatics manager tonight. I will let you fellas know what he knows about this (if anything), and what his concerns might be.
If they are there, I guess there is one way to look at it. Just like Newcastle, there are going to be some monstrous hogs in a couple years. But, also just like Newcastle, catching them is going to be mighty hard...

hedges -- no question what those fish are.
It sounds like Golden Shiners have been in Kolob for a number of years now. I thinnk it's too early to be talking about the doom and gloom of Kolob yet. They haven't had a huge impact on the lake yet. That's not to say that they won't. Hopefully they will not. I don't think that it will turn into another Newcastle, mainly because of the special regs that require the fish to be over 22" to keep. This is going to be somewhat like Strawberry. In Newcastle, the majority of the trout are taking out of the lake long before they reach a size big enough to start feeding on other fish. The small mouth in Newcastle are doing great, the problem with them is the competition fishermen have with the shiners. Why is a smallmouth going to take your tubejig when it is already stuffed with shiners?
Hopefully, Kolob will not go downhill. The size of the shiners in your pictures shows that they have been in the lake for some time. They have not destroyed the fishery yet, and hopefully they won't in the future. Only time will tell. Prayers might help.

Interesting post PBH. So did you pass this info on to the DWR and if you did, what did they say and was there any other reports of shiners being caught.
Maybe now they'll take the bait fishing problem at Kolob a little more seriously.
What, fish tube jigs at Newcastle, not me. I only only use freshly bought PB and garden hackle. If you can get past the shiners you'll get a smallie. But seriously, I use anything the shiners can't eat and most of the fish are hooked on reaction strikes. If you haven't noticed the feeding time is about 30 minutes morning and night.

I wouldn't know if they are a good bait or not. I give them the rock test and back in the water. If they pass the test then they should live if not something is eat it.
