Round, Sand, and Fish lake (report)6/21/04
#1
I made a solo run up to Round, Sand, and Fish Lakes for greyling today. The roads were wet all the way up. I left the trail head at 5:45 and got to Round lake at 7:30. I went almost all the way around Round lake with no luck. Thats 4 trip's in a row being skunked at Round. So I moved on to Sand lake and had much better luck there. I caught 22 Greyling with a Brown and White body, Brown and black dot PM #4. I went next to Fish Lake had better luck there. I caught 26 Greyling and a brookie with the same PM.

I did get to see 3 deer, a Moose and the coolest thing of all. A herd of Mountain Goats just a little way up the cliffs from Fish lake.

A BFT outing is planned to go for Greyling on the 10th of July.

By any chance did you try the inlet/outlets? Ive heard they are full of grayling as well. Just wondering. Thanks for the report. Was the hike killer?

Hm, I might be up for some grayling, too. Have you ever fished Marjorie Lake off the Crystal Lake Trailhead near Trial Lake. I've taken grayling up to 14 inches out of there on spinners. Lots of fun, not a bad hike and many other lakes to hit, too. A really fun day hike.

Marjorie is a great lake, but I feel that there is more brookies than grayling in there anymore. There use to be a lot of little guys, but now it seems they are gone and you have to go deep, but the grayling are big like you said. I was also told they were in weir lake as well.

Boy, am I jealous,

Several years ago I hiked into the "Four Lakes" and had a ball catching grayling in the lower lake. I've always wanted to hike the lakes you went to!!! I'm afraid I'm a little old now (70), but who knows, Sparky and I might get there yet. Good report! Did you taste any over a camp fire? Yum!!

Tell us more about the BFT outing! God that sounds tempting!!!! Stay away from the moose, ok? Read my post early this year.!!!!

Hey AG,

It's hard to fish the inlets/outlets when the fishing was red hot in the lakes. I did fish the out let on the way back down with out any luck. It is a killer hike, but thats one of the reason's I like it so much

Hey Leaky,

If you and Sparky want to try it let me know. We could work something out. If you want to try some of the shorter hikes for greyling let me know I'll be more then happy to go with you. The moose didn't want any thing to do with me and I was really glad when it started to run the other way.

Hey Mr Lipripper,

I haven't tried Marjorie or any of the other lake off of the Mirror lake highway. But if you want to trade trip's that would be cool with me.

Hey AQUAMAN,

Your always welcome just let me know ,Dude.

Marjorie lake is a far easier hike than Fish and Sand. If memory serves correctly, there is only one moderate grade, and it is only 2 1/2 miles one way from the trailhead. I bet you and Sparky could easily get there. I used to get there much quicker than the Sand lake hike. (which is 4 miles one way from Holiday park, and a harder hike.) I haven't fished the grayling lakes for several years (I just moved back to the state) and might be interested in a trip in late August or September too if I have the time.
