Unitas fishing
#1
Would anyone have a suggestion on an area in the Unitas accessable by four wheel drive to get away somewhat from the fourth of July crowds and have a chance at some fun fishing.

thank you

I like lake whitney and a few others up in that area. Fishing was good last time I was up there. It is a dirt trail twards the eastern entrance. There are a few other lakes up that way as well. Seen lots of moose/deer/elk up there and generaly there are no people. I would suggest picking up this atlas for more detailed directions.

If the link does not work it is ISBN 0929591747. This is the only atlas I use and I really like it. Also there are a few lakes up by Spirit lake that are accessable and off the beaten path however it is a much longer drive and the easiest way to drive there is from Wyoming.

Good luck and have fun!

I would suggest East Shingle Creek, or perhaps even castle lake. If you don't mind the walk, upper and lower yellopine lakes hold some fish...but they require a 2.5 hr hike. I can't guarantee that there won't be anyone up there, but they are high elevation lakes, that might limit some access.

There are alot of lakes just off the mirror lake highway that no body goes to. We used to got to blue lake and haysyack lake a few years back and we usually had the lake to ourselves. You need ground clearance to get there not necessarily 4 wheeld drive. Lots of big rocks to go over. Pick up a map of the Uintas and follow the mirror lake highway up from kamas to get to blue lake. You are supposed to buy a use/ parking permit for that area.

Good Luck. BB.

Welcome aboard Kent.

The high uintas is off limits to motorized travel, but there are probably some areas of the lower uintas that you can get to. The only one I'm familiar with is Smith and Morehouse. There's an atv trail at the guard shack, that goes up on top of the mountain where you can pretty much camp to your heart's content. The only fishing that I'm aware of there is the main lake and the rivers flowing into them, so you'd have to drive back down the mountain to fish. Oh, and the atv trail is drivable in a truck. I've done it a few times myself.

Have fun wherever you go. I'm going to soldier creek.

On the 4th? The Uinta's are getting more popular nowadays. If you find a lake with no one there let me know! Your best bet is hiking in to some out of the way lakes. Plan on hiking more than 4.0 miles to find a lake with no one there! I'd suggest going to the eastern side on the north slope. To find out of the way lakes that you can hike to. Good Luck, Your going to need it.

peace.
