Big fish eat other fish. Nobody can come here and just tell you what to use, how deep, and what time to catch a big fish. If we knew that, we'd be catching the big fish ourselves! The only thing you can do is go try. People use big Flat Fish, and Rapalas all the time at Fish Lake to target the large lake trout. Sometimes they are successfull and sometimes (most of the time) they are not. Don't get too excited about catching a large fish at Fish Lake. The best advice that you can be given, is to go there not expecting a large fish, and when (if) you do catch one, great!
The techniques at Fish Lake have been beaten to death. You need to decide what you are targeting, then go for it. If you are specifically targeting big fish, then expect a long, slow day of fishing. Fish deep. Use big stuff. Don't expect too many bites.
If you are looking for more action, move in closer and start using smaller stuff. This does NOT mean that you will not catch a big fish. Big Splake are constantly cruising the weeds looking for a meal, and big Lake trout will also.
I don't think that anyone catches 30-40" fish at Fish Lake consistently. This means that you either have to target the big fish, and fish for days (or weeks, or months, or years) before catching one. Or, you have to just luck into it.
I have said this before concerning Fish Lake: Don't go to Fish Lake with the expectations of catching a large fish. You will be disapointed. Especially if you have never been there. Do go to Fish Lake with expectations of catching nice fish, seeing some beautiful scenery, and seeing some wildlife. There is always a chance, no matter what bait or technique or tackle you use, to catch a truly large fish. Fish Lake is a beautiful place, that provides an opportunity to catch lots of nice sized fish, while at the same time a chance (albeit slim) of catching a trophy fish. Those fish are hard to come by. But, you never know when that big fish is going to take your bait. Good luck. I hope you do get something big!
