Thanks for the Cat Info
#1
Hey,

I just wanted to say thank you for the help you offered for cats. I have put a little bit to the test and it payed off. I fished Friday night (25th) and caught a couple of chicken livers. One I caught was 22" and about 4 lbs. It sure tasted great on Monday. Monday I went back out because I hadn't got enough of it. We started about 7:00 and it was hot and heavy for a while, then after dark it shut down. Had a couple of hits but at 10:30 we called it a night. We caught most of them on chicken livers. I have a few questions about them in a minute. I fished the Bear River in Cache Valley near Amalga on some private land. On Monday night we got another about 19 or 20 " and 3 lbs'ish. My dad came with me for a while and threw some flies. He caught a carp and hooked a couple more on his 5 weight. He had a ball.

Now for the questions. I am getting a ton of hits on the chicken livers. Have you got any ideas on how to rig them better so I can hook up more? I'm sure I'm doing it wrong...but it's working mostly. And the carp meat rig...how is the best way to do that? I can't seem to get anything on them. I'm going to find some minnows to use. (dead of course) Thanks for the help and I would gladly accept some more tips. I coupld probably trade a trip or two for some fly fishing in Southern Idaho. Great fish and beautiful scenery.

Thanks for your help!

USE A TREBLE HOOK AND SOME CHEESE CLOTH OR A PEACE OF NYLON STOCKING . CUTT A SQARE HOOK LIVER ON THEN PUT IT IN THE CLOTH AND TIE CORNERS TOGETHER. THIS WILL HOLD THE BAIT ON AND ASSIST YOU ON MOORE HOOK UPS.

This is my favorite catfish rig: Tie on a T-swivel (2way swivel). Attach 1 small leader or snelled hook to each side, preferably each one being a different length to minimize chances that they will tangle up, and to fish 2 different depths if you're dropping it below a bobber.

Use a large 1/0 or 2/0 at least size worm hook. Hook a half a worm on one side, and a 1 inch square piece of carp meat on the other. Leave the skin on the carp meat, but remove the scales. Hook the hook through the meat and the skin. I've caught a few channels on the same piece of carp meat -- you can't get it to come off even if you want it to. At the end of the day or when I need a fresh piece it often takes pliers to tear through the skin to get it off the hook.

Cast this out with no weight, no sinkers of any kind. Sometimes cats will drop the bait if they feel the weight of a sinker on there. Here's a very crude picture of what I mean:

I would tie on that Chicken Liver with Stretchy Thread (do a search for Stretchy Thread on Cabela's website) to tie on that liver. It works great and won't kill a fish if it happens to swallow it like will likely happen if it swallows a nylon stocking (because it can't digest it). I use it to tie on bottled herring when fishing for sturgeon.
