I have been thinking of buying a down rigger to put on my Dads boat. He has said he would like one but does not want to put out the money out to get one. Would a down rigger be worth it on bear lake and the gorge? I have been looking at one that has a quick release plate on it.

I have two on my boat, around here they haven't done me any jsutice, probably because I usually goe to Echo or East Canyon. When I lived in Rock Springs and went to the gorge regularly, I used them very sucessfully for cokes. In any case, they definately help in certain situations. Good luck on getting dad on board.

Both of mine have a quick release on a swivel. I have the base mounted to a small piece of oak that I treated with linseed oil. They are connected to the boat with 2 stainless bolts. Takes about 4 minutes to either put one on or take one off.

almost all downriggers on the market today have a quick tab base, that makes it alot easier to use.you ask if they are worth it to use on the gorge or bear lake ,well if you want to catch fish you have to go where the fish are.i have two cannon mini-mags electrics, and like then both very well cannon is a quality product, you can spend a little or alot depends on what you want.

To have a chance at catching fish you have to get your bait/lure where the fish are. If they are not near the surface that most likely means either using lead on your line, leaded line, some type of Dipsy Diver or similar, or a downrigger. The advantage of a downrigger is that you can precisely control your depth (critical for both kokanee and lakers) and when you are fighting a fish you are not also fighting a bunch of lead. I enjoy my downrigger, and have even used it on places like Willard, but at times I have been outfished by others on my boat with leaded line or long lining, but not often.

Your down rigger and your fish finder are your friends. These 2 fishing toolsking together will put your lure or bait right in their noses. I can clearly see my rigger weights on my depth sounder and it has helped me at all lakes.
You don't need super riggers and there are lots of good base options to fit your needs. Consult your favorite tackle shop. I have a Cannon Easi troll and it works but can be a lot ofwork if your in areas where the depth changes rapidly.
I will have an electric Cannon.
